Ilaekae, sad to see you go and get away from your ass-beating so easy. I hope the funeral goes ok... 3 days for a funeral? Thats a long funeral... im guessing it involves a wake? In which case, perhaps you can still be 'the last man standing' :)
Best of luck to all you who still have their balls attached!

Not only did i only have 2 weeks to begin with as im a reserve, but i finally got back last night after visiting family as i got requited whilst i was away, and i was going to work non stop on my entry to get it done, but i turned on my comp last night...... and what do you know it, my 3d card crapped itself D:. Looks like im going to have to resort to my old crappy computer that shits itself at anything more than a simple brush D:.

Final post til Saturday (possibly)...
Cody, I withdrew in post 499 because of a situation that involves my traveling 120 miles for a personal commitment (funeral). The original plan was that I would not be able to get back by the deadline for LMS. I just spoke to the guy who's driving me itonight and he may be returning early because of his own commitment here, which means I might--MIGHT--be back by early Friday evening. I need approximately 7 hours to finish my entry, and that might just be possible, since the deadline for me is 3:00am Saturday morning. Even then, it's a 50-50 thing by a couple of hours either way.
I'll leave my status up to you. If you think someone else should get a crack at it (which I think would be very fair), go for it and replace me when you see this. Just leave me a note here one way or the other, because I won't have access online til I get back. I'm going to finish it anyway, but won't post in the finished section until after you post the entire legit entries.
Talk to all on Saturday. Good luck to everyone.

Back from the workshop and completely hungover, I have an extension announcement to make yet again. I will not have the chance to spend any time setting up all of your entries into a judging page for the judging panel, much less the Finally Finished threads with all of your completed matches. Just can't happen.
I don't like giving this last extension, but it will be the last one. This round was fucked by my own personal jet-setting as well as the holidays. Don't fucking whine about this either. ;)
The seriously super mega final deadline is:
Saturday, January 19th 11:59pm PST
My apologies to those who have submitted an entry already, this one is partly my fault.

@ Pau1Winslow:
If you go to your CA account (probably through User CP) you can change your settings to display the time of people's posts as PST. That way you can have a way of knowing easily what is PST compared to GMT. I used to do that when RedRook moderated the EOW and made those deadlines be in GMT.

Cody im more than happy to have the extension since im at an intensive oils workshop all week and could use more sleep... but just a thought, why didnt you leave the due date as it was and just take longer to get the threads up? Its polishing a turd really but i think splitting the wait time up could be good (for future extensions, or whatever).

Yeah, don't sign it. Strych9ine has said he is going to present the material to the judges in a manner that won't reveal the identity of the artist. I admit I myself have been presuming that would only have limited effect, in as much as everyone will probably dump their piece straight into their sketchbooks (where inquiring minds can then find out which is which). What can you do?

Will the FF thread be up while the judges are deciding? Or can there be a rule that no one can make their piece public until the judges are done/ FF thread is put up?

January 9th, 2008, 07:37 PM
Yeah. These little "blurting it out" kind of issues are what I was basically wondering about. By pointing out the "sketchbook blurt out" possibility, I had hoped to get some kind of ruling.
I'd say in the absence of that, you are safest to wait until the judges are done. That way you don't piss off Cody and get banned from next year on a blurt out theory rather than a puss out theory.

you did make the choice to turn down paid work for non-paid work though, can't blame others for that. Some people had their pieces done for the original deadline, nobody is forcing you to put in any overtime here. I think the only people with a right to complain are those who had to drop because of a paid-work conflict and then find out that they would have had the time to do both.

Weirdly, even though I'm finishing my piece up by the previous deadline, the extension will only help me out if I make it to round 2 by pushing the due date for that back a bit so I can better accomodate a comics gig.
It's good that this one is actually coming to a close, though -- I had so many false starts on the concept that went from the too vague to too on the nose that I'll just be happy to see the back end of this.

cody im SO SO angry at you. I just... i wouldn't normally post this... i just had to get it off my chest. I hate bottling things up. I think what you are doing here is really unprofessional and unfair.. you are treating us all like dirt man! Where do you get off, on giving us an extension. Its rediculous. Just because you work a hoity toity job and you married a hooker doesnt give you the right to tread all over the little guy. I hope I have appealed to some part of you deep down that knows this is true. I hope you reconsider your life and make some serious changes. Because you have a lot of potential to be a good person, but its a lifetime commitment and you have to be serious about it. I for one hope that you can do that.
Best wishes, let me know if you ever need a hug. We all have to cry some time!
*edit* on a more serious note -- to the amateurs and middleweights competing: it is my experience that due to the internet and the modern art community, many of us do a lot of reading and thinking online. This leads to a whole lot of theoretical knowledge, of rules, colour theories, analysing art and all that sort of stuff. But we lack the tactile experience of an Atelier where you put your knowledge to practise every day. If you think you have finished your piece, i would suggest taking a part of that knowledge bank you think you know about it, and really push that part of your piece. Colour temperature is a good one. You could spend 3 weeks on a painting just looking at similar objects in life and seeing how subtle the temperature shifts can be. Refine the values. Flip it and see how the shape design is working. Does your storytelling convey your message instantly or is it slightly confusing? The masters spent years on their paintings - dont tell me you cant find something to improve for another week :p

You know Form... all this is very nice and you are very persuasive but the fact remains.. deadlines should mean something...
Saying all this, I repeat as I wrote already in another place... this TD is Cody's idea and he can do pretty much anything with rules and deadlines... but of course there are some considerations that everything should be taking in moderation and with sense. Your ideas about little people I don't like at all. I don't look at art like this. I expect to see beauty in every new image doesn't matter from who it will come.

I guess if the majority wills it to happen then it should. I just thought it was important to point out that moving deadlines about at will can hinder people as well as help them and isn't always a good idea, especially when the dealine is imminent
+ in my case as soon as I hear the word extension I suddenly relax and an overwhelming sense of sloth comes over me
much respect for Cody doing the whole thing off his own back though, of course we all appreciate the effort

Well, I have a few things to say about the deadline extension and puss-outs in general:
1. (To the Participants, not our Host:) We've had a long time to get this done. These entries had better be pretty damn awesome - how long does it take you guys to come up with and execute a concept? Professionals in the industry shouldn't have a problem blowing the doors off this contest, and noobs - if you can't succeed with all these deadline extensions, how do you expect to make it in the real world as a concept artist?
2. Yes, there is no official prize for this contest, but everyone who signed up pretty much made an obligation to produce a work of art in a certain time frame. Sure, you can make arguments for how other things are more important, or other things came up, or your computer crashed (how many people out there are working on junk computers? I swear, if I had a share of Microsoft for every "my computer crashed and I lost my entry" excuse I've heard, I'd own Bill Gates - and I'd be rich, because you'd have to buy another computer if all those excuses were indeed true). Still, if you puss out, what does that say about you? Unless it involves death or dismemberment or your house burning down, unexpected divorce, or a handful of other extreme circumstances, failing to meet the deadline or pussing out reflects extremely poorly on your accountability and professionalism. This contest may mean little to you, but to some of us it is taken seriously as a place to push ourselves, outside of work, to create something our souls need to bring to life to prevent withering in our banal society, and to many of the people on the reserve list, who lost out because a lazy, slacker puss-out took their spot, you have done a great disservice to the Concept Art community and yourself. If you pussed out due to laziness or unprofessionalism, and you don't feel extremely bad about it to the point where you are motivated to change the slothlike aspects of your wasted existence, then try not to waste our time in the future and stay the heck away from the challenge forums. Most puss out excuses are probably absolute BS anyway - you were just afraid to compete and realized you got in over your head, and turned tail and ran. Well, keep running. (Unfortunately, internet is pretty much worldwide, so no matter where your chicken legs carried you, you'd find a way to come back here again...damn it...)
3. That being said, there IS a prize for this contest. There are many potential career-making prizes. ImagineFX is covering this contest, MAJOR people in the CA industry are paying attention, including Senior Art Directors from some of your favorite companies, and who knows who else? And you know what, since these forums are public, they can see which people are making a bunch of lame-ass excuses for why they can't make this very generous deadline extension, and they'll know not to approach you for work.
4. I've had my share of problems as well, but none of them have stopped me from competing. A stinking dog at a friend's house chewed through and completely severed my Wacom cord, and I had to surgically splice it back together (if any of you have ever seen how tiny those wires are, you know how difficult that is) and work with a damaged Wacom held together by a wad of electrical tape. Then, I realize I'm out of nibs and the one I'm using is so short it's almost INSIDE the pen and Wacom is taking FOREVER to ship me replacements. Plus, I moved, most of my stuff is still in boxes, but I've got my computer set up rather haphazardly in my very unpacked work area, working in a very non-ergonomic way amongst piles of boxes in a freezing cold basement with poor lighting and a goddamn broken window that I haven't had time to fix because I work 12 hours a day (with commute) and have a daughter that needs looking after until she goes to bed, leaving me maybe 3 hours a night to try to get anything done (including paying bills, eating and showering)- which usually turns into 5 hours because I end up saying f@#k sleep, which sucks when I have to get up for another soul-sucking day at Merrill Lynch on 4 hours of sleep if I'm lucky. But my entry is done, despite it all, and as you'll all see, it is VERY expansive, incredibly detailed, and not something that was just crapped out in a few hours at a computer between video games, bong hits, and internet porn all-nighters. Where there's a will, there's a way, as they say.
So revel in the deadline extension. But damn it, make something of it, get some incredibly awesome piece of artwork done, and don't puss out because you're a lowsy, lazy, slacker waste of time who never should have signed up for this contest. The only way this contest is going to reach its potential is if people take it seriously, and if all that's turned in is crap and excuses, the best artists here at CA are going to stop taking it seriously, and it will be a joke of a contest populated by riff-raff.
P.S. I 10000000% support strych9ine's banning of any puss-outs from future competitions (not counting, of course, legitimate death-related reasons, but still, you guys had forever to get your entries done, and waiting until the last minute and being blindsided by something is, in itself, unprofessional as well, technically). You wasted our time once, and forced worthy participants to take a spot on the reserve list, why would we want to let you do it to us a second time?

cody im SO SO angry at you. I just... i wouldn't normally post this... i just had to get it off my chest. I for one hope that you can do that.

well zak, ya got me. haha wow :) well, back to class for me
Well, I have a few things to say about the deadline extension and puss-outs in general:
There are many potential career-making prizes. sve - i dont know what you mean about 'my ideas about the little people' - was that taken from the joke part or the second part? Because i completely agree with your assertion and i shirk fundementalism in all its forms... i am no elitist... hopefully you can clarify by PM perhaps? I dont want this thread being hijacked any more than it is :)
as for the second part of my post, i do think there are plenty of ways to keep working on a piece and refining it. And as for deadlines and time and so on, its a fairly regular thing when you are working as an artist to have timings moved around. Sure its a hassle and whatever but its always going to happen so I find just going with the flowing and using obstacles as opportunities are the best way.
Anyhow, hopefully my chagrin wit has now been exposed in all its blundering tomfoolery - i didnt mean to cause a stir... this was a fun thread to wake up to... i havnt even had my coffee yet! *pushes groan button at his own life*

Why to PM when I can say it here :). I was wrong I apologize :)... I thought you were weighing art and artists like kilos of potatoes... IMO Art can't be measured strictly speaking... Finished painting doesn't mean it is a good art. Everything is as indefinite as it can be. Connection with art should come individually, shouldn't be influenced by names and a brilliant past of the artist or other person charisma.
I'm sorry I misunderstood you. I should count till 100 not till ten when write something. :).

And don't get me wrong--I appreciated the extension during the holiday season. But that's long and over with, so I'm at a loss as to why this is happening AGAIN.
Even if you can't get all the judges in at this time, at least get the artwork accumilated, and set the contest results for the folllowing weekend after everyone's met up and had a chance to look at everything! This should be called, "Last Man Slacking".....

Uh... The workshop? Half the contestants, judges, *and* the organizer were there. Don't be a jerk, it might seem easy when you're just making a picture, but an event this huge takes a whole lot of work for those putting it together - and when it's one guy, you should be giving him a slow, romantic ass-licking, not whining.

So I'm still in...I leave for a few days and come back to some good news...and the fact that apparently half the would-be winners here are out to lynch Cody...
Good. Now I wanna make sure that the piece of shit I turn in is better than anything the fuckin' whiners show up with...I mean...how hard can it be? Hey, Whiners... I knew what my piece was gonna look like 35 seconds after Cody announced the theme. It's been 95% done since two days before the original deadline, and now I have an entire week or so to finish and clean it up. I would have had it done sooner, but aside from the usual holiday family shit, my retirement and a few funerals, I really had nothing else to do...
Except try to mentor the most patient bunch on the face of the earth for putting up with my sudden absences, and help out Seedling a wee bit on the classrooms, and establish the Comics Challenge from scratch, and get some research together on future assignments, but...hey...somebody has to do it. Took a little time, but I'll survive...but everything I did the entire time, personally and here, is nothing-- N O T H I N G --compared to what went into staging an event like the LMS, and if you don't recognize that fact, allow me to be the first to enlighten you...
I'm pointing this out just to make it quite clear to all you totally-offended-with-Cody sumbitches out there that act like your fuckin' lives have been ruined by his "playin' around" that I'm gonna be sittin' here patiently waiting to see just what project you've come up with in your "spare" time that will advance the forum that you pop in and out of every day without any charge or hassle. If any of you knew how to use the fuckin' brain your parents gave you, you'd know the best thing to do is not even attempt anything, because i don't think you have the ability to do what Cody, Seedling, Chaos, Fonzie, Romance, Sunny and all the other hard-working slackers who have nothing better to do than show up here once in a while and pretend they're doing something complex and maybe informative/educational/entertaining.
And, just in case you missed it, that last sentence WAS FUCKIN' SARCASM!
On the day Cody posts the entries, I'm going to be enjoying myself, but maybe not for the reasons everyone else will be...slackers...

I am getting lots of pussies pussing out lately, so much so that I am not going to waste my time informing you all of who is in for who. If you decide to submit, I will do my best to fit you in wherever I can. With the steady flow of puss slobbering it's way into my inbox, I would say you've got a pretty good chance of getting in.
If, for some reason, I get more reservist submissions than open slots, I will take whoever was higher up on the list first. So submit, you have a very good chance of squirming your way in!

I dont know if im confused because of the fact that people sign up for LMS and Puss out in the last week or because of all the glue in my paperbag. Its maybe both. I think about people that puss out with just a couple of days left. Who are these people? Do they like the smell of glue as well? are they afraid that their dicks arent gonna show beside the really big ones? They think maybe its just so that "I ate to damn much food this X-mas and my fingers are now to tubby to press the post button"? a firecracker went of in my rectum?
I want to read the excuses people give you for pussying out! They must be tons of fun. :D
Maybe its me or maybe its the glue talking but its fucking weak to puss out with one week left!!!!!!

Maurizio, I think emailing Strych9ine a link is not the same as posting publicly. Still, if you have another 6 days, why not put the drawing aside for two or three days and then come back for a look with fresh eyes? It's quite relaxing.
To the people who are still worried about fundamental things in their drawings::mittenbop:
You should be in the stage where you are tweaking details in several various versions of your piece by now. The people who are submitting basically can't even think of anything new to try, presumably.

Thanks to everyone who's taking their spare time to contribute and volunteer in this thing. This is by far one of the most in-depth and generous forums for artists, out there, and I'm just thrilled to have a chance to get my ass whupped by some of these talented mo-fos. Don't think I'm not gonna try, tho'!

okay...i'm ripping a mega bandaid off as i write this.
i have to bail. no amount of time with gracious extensions will help.
work and freelance are ramped up.
the passing of my wife's grandma is weighing heavily on our hearts now that things are getting 'back to normal'.
this would be an awesome project to take to final...but feel that the fun will have to wait for another time.
cody, thanks for the extension and hearing my plea.
to my opponents, my apologies.
to all....i'm pussin' out.

Would you guys do me a favor and name your files in the manner that I asked you to in the first post of the thread? That'd be FANTASTIC!
The Finally Finished thread will go up as early as I can this weekend, but it might have to wait until Tuesday. My computer at home has conveniently decided not to find the hard drive when booting up. Relax, toss a few back, and it'll all be up before you know it.

Last Man Standing is apparently hell on hardware.
After all this time, I decided to find a good stopping point to send mine before some kind of y2k disaster got me. I know from experience that hundreds of people on the internet trying to do the same thing at the very same instant can lead to some problems.
As I recall, how to name the files is kind of right there near the address of where to send them. It's convenient. Maybe that's the problem.

Ok, i submitted the image,
now that i look at it, it really sucks big time, and i totally seem to go up in my own ideas, it became a far cry from the original concept wich was more related to the theme "underneath it all", though theres a lot of symbolic meaning in it...

yeah i did exactly the same. over the course of a few weeks i lost the simplicity and directness of my initial concept, and forgot the number one rule that a painting should communicate its message clearly. I got wrapped up in all the devices of composition, and forgot the composition :)
The final extension from the 11th to the 19th gave me the chance i needed to start a new piece, which i did 2 days ago, and im much happier with the way the concept comes across... hey, theres still time!

I struggled with the theme really bad for a while. I tried a couple of directions. Decided they were cliche. Then made a list of what I thought were cliche ideas. I think I may have ended up with an illustration that some may think doesn't fit the topic amazingly well. We'll see. I suspect when scrolling down through the final thread, Shelly Wan's piece will be right after mine so I'll think mine is crap. :) oh boy

Don't ya'll hate that last minute hesitation, where you're about to send it off, and even though you've been staring at this thing for over 40 hours, suddenly some glaring thing chooses at that point to jump in your face?
