Whats a CA-er to do in the NYC area? Seems like a tough place to manage a fantasy/sci-fi art career.
Any tips??

What makes you say that, beyond the high cost of living?

Its true that if you live in a a place like LA or San Francisco you'll probably get more face time with higher-ups looking for sci-fi fantasy art for games, films, etc. But if you work remote freelance it doesn't matter much where you live -just make sure your online folio looks great.

Either way, NYC actually has an excellent market for fantasy illustration (i.e. book covers and the like) as I'm sure Elwell, or Dan Dos Santos would tell you. A lot of Comics work here too if you're into that.

I don't know what your capabilities are or if you're willing to relocate, but you could always just hone the folio, target a few select studios, and land a staff job. There are a couple big studios in NYC believe it or not; Rockstar is here if I'm not mistaken and Blue Sky is just a bit north I believe. There're also lesser known outfits like 1st Avenue Machine, Eyeball, Gameloft, and so on. Sniff around a bit, you may be surprised what you'll find. good luck out there!

ok. thanks. Im working on the folio. Painting, while trying to find consistent work, while trying to find "real" work has me down in the dumps. Managing time and growing up is a bitch.
There are so many game companies out there. Any idea on ones that deal with off site freelancers? I dont expect the work done for me, I just dont have the time to waste on companies that dont do that sort of thing.
I appreciate the leads. Thank you.
