Welcome to the Stylised Animal Monthly Challenge, sponsored by Zoo Publishing Magazines and 3DTotal. Please post all images & questions in this thread.

What is this challenge all about?
Each month we will select an animal and post some images as reference. All you have to do is create a 2D Painting of this creature in a stylised/abstact/cartoon style whilst keeping your creature instantly recongnisable. We wanted to publish some content in 2DArtist Magazine on how to create styliaed animals, such as you see in the many feature films and cartoon galleries. We thought this regular competition might bring in just the images/Making Ofs we need, whilst giving away great prizes and exposure.

What are we looking for?
Funny and humourous entries which break the animal down to its most recognisable components; enphasise these in whichever ways you think best and render your stylised/abstact/cartoon masterpiece!

Timeframes and requirements?
The rules are pretty laid back: please submit 1 x 2D Final Image. If you want to have a background or include some graphical elements or text on your image, it's up to you. Image posts should be around 800 pixels across, but please work at a much higher res as the top 10 will be featured in 2DArtist Magazine (http://www.2dartistmag.com). There will be 1 comp per month, with the deadline being the end of the month, 10.30AM GMT. For a valid entry, just make sure your final image is posted in the VOTING thread before this time. We require the top 3 winners to submit 'Making Of' overview articles that will be shown on either 3DTotal or 2DArtist Magazine (http://www.2dartistmag.com); these need to show the stages of your creation, different elements and some brief explanation text of why, and how, you did what you did. We will format this into some nice looking pages to give you some great exposure and us some quality content.

Posting Works in Progress
Each competition will have one thread that starts with this info and the brief at the top. This is where all entrants post all WIPs, give feedback, and generally laugh at the crazy ideas that are emerging each month.

Please don't start any new threads!, Just reply to this one already set up!

Prizes!!
1st Place Any 3 items from the 3DTotal Shop (http://www.3dtotal.com/shop). We sell lots of items these days such as our book, (http://www.3dtotal.com/book/) Design Studio Press books, (http://www.3dtotal.com/design%5Fstudio%5Fpress/)textureCDs, (http://www.3dtotal.com/textures/) Shorts DVDs, (http://www.3dtotal.com/shorts/)Lots of training DVDs (http://www.3dtotal.com/training/) and 12 month subscriptions to 3DCreative Magazine (http://www.3dcreativemag.com) and 2DArtist Magazine (http://www.2dartistmag.com).

2nd Place
Any 2 items from the 3DTotal Shop (http://www.3dtotal.com/shop).

3rd Place
Any 1 item from the 3DTotal Shop (http://www.3dtotal.com/shop).

We do unfortunately have to limit prizes to 1 book per winner per competition due to high postage costs for heavier items.

Judging
Everyone who entered can cast a vote of their top 3 in order; we will award 3pts for a 1st place vote, 2 for 2nd and 1 for 3rd. Then we will add them up and ship out your prizes!

This month we have chosen Dinosaurs - but only carnivorous ones!.

omg! 2 months in a row, its dinosaur heaven:)

I'm curious if we are limited to land-based carnivors, or would we be able to draw up a flying, or even ocean dwelling dino too?

grenogs
October 31st, 2007, 11:17 AM
well if you look up the meaning to dinosaur, pleidosaurs and pterasaurs aren't concidered as actual dinosaurs, something i've only recently discovered myself after years of thinking they were. But i don't think it'll make much difference, concidering how many diferent species there were. And if you want something diferent to the norm, just take something from the triasic era, very diferant compared to the cretatious.

hello,

well, next month is going to be 'ocean dwelling' dinosaurs, so you might want to enter one of those next month!

as for flying carnivorous dinosaurs - yep, why not?!:) we won't be having a separate challenge for flying dinos, so feel free everyone to include them in this month's carnivorous challenge... as long as they ate meat, of course ;)

have fun!!

Hello,

I can't help but notice the previous challenges were around a month or so long... any reason why this one is only a week? I'm not complaining, just curious. :tihi:

scarypotatoe yeah i was a little disapointed to when i dicovered it to, for years and years i thought, whether it lived in water or fly it was still a dinosaur, until someone in the cow#100 pointed it out, and yep like you i checked it, and yep he was right :(. but hey, look at the bright side, more dinosaurs next month ;)

Hello,

I can't help but notice the previous challenges were around a month or so long... any reason why this one is only a week? I'm not complaining, just curious. :tihi:

Hi,

Warin from ZooPublishing here, I think Lynette mistyping as Grenogs said, Let me clear this for you.

The correct timefram is;

The deadline for all entries to be posted (WIP, stages, concept etc) is the end of the every month GMT. So it will be on Friday, 30th for the Carnivore one.

After that the week later, as 1st December, all entries will have to post their final image (no WIP) in a post which will be created sperately.

The deadline for posting final image is 8th December, then voting time will start at 8th and run until 15th of December and at 15th the winners will be annouced!

Hope this helps and clear : ))

Regards and good luck!

I wouldn't be too worried as these challenges have had slow starts before. I bet everyone is just really busy drawing their dinosaurs!

Still, I might be tempted to enter once again later this month if I deem it necessary. ;)

Update #2

miss.lynette
November 16th, 2007, 04:13 PM
hello, yes that's correct gnahz, but i will need everyones' email addresses to send them out.:) at the moment i believe only the top ten entrants go in the magazines and therefore get a download link, but i don't see any reason why every entrant who posts a final entry cannot receive a complimentary issue of 2DArtist magazine.:) i will need those email addresses to be emailed to me though (to [email protected]) so i can see to that for you all! it may be a good idea if people drop me an email once they've posted their final entry!:) let me know if that sounds good.:)

cheers,
Lynette

miss.lynette
November 17th, 2007, 11:13 AM
hi grenogs, well we need all the support we can get so if you guys can buy the magazines then every little helps;) but yes, any entrants who submit a final entry [not just WIPs though, sorry] can claim a free issue if they email me.:)

looking forward to seeing your idea, ab4185:)

miss.lynette
November 17th, 2007, 11:27 AM
I'm going to make some rules about this 'complimentary issue' thing, as follows:

1. The offer applies to the Dinosuar - Carnivore Challenge only [we'll see how it goes for future months as we could get people abusing the offer]

2. The final entry must be a serious one, and not just a squiggle submitted purely just to get a free copy of the mag [this will be left to Zoo Publishing's discretion]

3. That's it actually:)

So basically, ever entrant [who adheres to the above 'rules'] this month can get a complimentary issue of 2DArtist [January issue], which will feature the top voted for entries of the Carnivore Challenge.

Note: at the moment, and as planned for future competitions, only the 'voted for' entries who fall in the top 10 positions are featured in the magazines and therefore receive their free issue [as they have contrubuted to the magazine, of course]. This free issue to every entrant offer is just going to be an offer for this Dinosaur-Carnivore Challenge only, to see how it goes.

Cheers and enjoy the challenge!:)

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a50/ScrumYummy/punk_bw.jpg

(definition: shreddin';
derived from shredding
(v) : present participle of the verb to shred {rip, tear, etc}
(n) : a style of technically proficient guitar playing)

Punk is a dinosaur MUAHAHAHAHAHA.
...it's cute. Sort of.

This is already inked (micron on bristol), but if anybody has any critiques/suggestions I am open to them (I may be able to make changes digitally). Colored version soon to come.

i prolly won't have time to do this, but i recently did a book on evolution called 'out of thin air' that had oodles of dinos in it. here's a piece i did for chapter 1 - it's called 'when lungs battle' since it's all about how the more efficient bird lungs outsted the usual lungs (think bovine). ;)
note: this isn't an entry, just a sharing/caring.

Hello Everyone! Great work!!

This is to announce that the VOTING thread is now up and ready for your fantastic final entries to be posted!:)

Please post your Final Images in the following new thread: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=112268
800 or 1024 size is fine.

Please post all entries before 10th December 2007 10:30AM GMT.
Only entries posted before this date in this 'Stylized Animal Challenge - Nov 2007 - DINOSAUR (CARNIVORE) - VOTING' thread, will be eligible for Voting.

Voting will then start immediately afterwards and will run until 17th December 2007 10:30AM GMT

Note: the dates have changed slightly because the 3DTotal team aren't in the studio over the weekends, so the 10th and 17th are the Mondays closest to the 8th and 16th.

I will post to commence the Voting. Voting will be the same as last month with each voter putting forward their top 3 in order, 3pts for a 1st place, 2 pts for 2nd and 1 for 3rd. This means that will have to choose carefully! Feel free to give a reason for your choice as it will be good feedback for all of you!

Thanks again for the enourmous amount of work you have all put in, as usual!:)

Best of luck!!

Lynette - 2DArtist/3DTotal

P.S. I'll be setting up the next challenge shortly: SWIMMING DINOSAURS [or, Plesiosaurs and Ichthyosaurs to be precise - apparently there's no such thing as swimming or flying dinosaurs, as dinosaurs technically only lived on the land! But let's not be fussy - let's just have some fun with this topic!! ;)
