View Full Version : Teen Challenge #37: Gun Slinger Anti-Hero
Evil_Sloth

Howdy dudes!
Glad to see so many people enter the last challenge.
Hope fully we can top that with this one!
The Rules:
Anyone ages 13-19 may submit an entry at any time before the deadline. Please host your image on a remote image-hosting site instead of uploading it to the CA server. This makes it much easier to transfer it to the poll thread.
The Topic:
Gun Slinger Anti Hero, think of those Clint Eastwood western movies but try to spice it up! Maybe he/she from the future, Asia, little kid, beautiful girl taking revenge on the world for killing her
Think about all the guns they can have and all the story behind them.
Also include a background if you have time can be simple or intergrated into the scene.
Please add a small description or storyline. We don't want a five page essay but make it nice, brief, and to the point. Especially if there is something in your design which needs explaining.
Add a border around your image with your name and the topic, like they do with the other of the week challenges.
The Deadline:
Wenesday, November 14th at midnight PST
Two weeks. Yeeeeee-haaaaaaaaaaah bitches!

Maybe I'm in this time I don't know yet how much time I have the next two weeks.
But first I have a question. Could someone explain me the word 'Slinger'. I don't get what this means.

But first I have a question. Could someone explain me the word 'Slinger'. I don't get what this means.
I don't think it's a actual English word, but this what what I got:
"Gun slinger or slinger: A 6f or larger, circle or square of denim, canvas, or burlap with a hole for the wearer's head in the center. Usually woven of black, dark brown, and navy blue threads. Worn over a shirt.
The slinger disguises the gunslinger's movements. It is also often worn over long johns at night as a blanket."
Which doesn't give that much sense with "anti-hero". It's another subject that can mean a billion different things, and which gives us the freedom to make our own interpretation!

Honestly I don't think anyone cares who wins and who doesn't. It's more of a team building exercise, comparing your own work to someone elses critiqually is unhealthy.
But seriously, There is no question in my mind that this is the challenge in which I shall finally prevail!!!...to get more than 1 vote...muahahah!

Hoping it's okay that I comment, even if I am a snick outside my teen years.
:^^:
Loving the work so far, GREAT progress...
Hey Jake - I dig the mood you're setting in your piece. My issue is that everything has the same exact value range, there is no center of focus (all the metals has the same shading, black to white, etc.) Focus the light source more so the areas closer are brightest. Also, gun looks a little chunky. What is he standing on? Keep going...
Evil_sloth - great style on this one, I really like the gritty feel it's building up. The hand that's forshortened (holding the gun) feels a little wonky, I think the angle he's holding the gun, and maybe how skinny the arm is? Could just be that it's mid-render... Excited to see this finished!

originaldoive - nice update, it makes much more sense now. Your proportions seem off to me. The chin is kind of small for the rest of the head (even if he is looking down, the rest of his head seems to be dead on) and the neck kind of wide. Also the torso seems kind of long for his legs/arms. Did you have a reference you were working from? The rendering is looking a little flat with the white highlights ALL over (though you might be adjusting this in color, just watch out on those) I hope that helps some, and keep pushing this, it has SO much potential!
:^^:
Goog - my pleasure! I wish I'd had the foresight to be doing what you all are doing at that age. Bravo!

I don't think levels is your issue, it's the values (levels has to do with a photoshop tool that adjusts your values, but this works only for tweaking, they need to be painted more or less correctly from the get go). Everything has the same tonal range all over, where some things should be brighter and others a little darker to make the lighting look more realistic (for this I recommend studying shadows and form, LOTS of life drawing) You definitely made some improvements, it needs to go further still...
Keep going!
:^^:

HAHAHAHA! Sorry, I'm kinda slow sometimes.
The levels refer to the number of posts you've made in the forums. Make 50, you go to level 2 gladiator, make 100 you go to level 3 gladiator, and so on.

Apts: Great shine on the armor. As for the legs, when I get stuck, I doodle the bones of the leg on another layer and work with that until it makes sense. Right now, your gunslinger looks a bit like he's going to fall forward, and his left leg looks a little small compared to his right.
Pyro: Oooh kickass~ are you going to keep it in that graphic style or color it?

oook, so here are the lines for my gunslinger, will get to coloring soon. His gun is his arm. Basically he decided to chop his own arm off (he's nuts yup) to place a gun instead so he would be even faster to gun sling(?), faster to shoot. I'll write a description later :)

Hey Vibhas...good looking piece...although i think the Head lets it down, trying adding more definition..a stronger jawline..and from a design point of view...those eyes could be smaller...they will look more sinister that way...i know you've inked it and changing the eyes could be problematic, but you could ink the head in black and leave the eyes white...thus shrinking them. Also the hat seems to connect straight to his head...? The bottom half is fine though.

so, I changed my mind for the story. He was some sort of killer for hire, working mainly for "bad" people, and one day he was betrayed by one of his employer. This employer was scared of his great gunslinging abilities and had decided he would eliminate him. But he only cut his arm off, and left him for dead.
But, the killer survived, and is now back with a new arm and a vengeance.

@evil_sloth: this one is awesome! i love the atmosphere and the texture...that detail shot looks damn good
im quite not satisfied with my...i just started to paint something digital and just used the hard round brush...there are so many small things i don't like ;)

terra nola - wellcome to conceptart.org! or maybe you've been a lurker? and thanks for the props mistah!
i have a few lil tips for your picture. use reference, cause without it you will be guessing and its hard to see what you do wrong. I say the leg-croch-hip area is in the most need of some look-ups. the top of her chest is to far out from her bodey too. so when you feel that you are guessing, look it up. it will improve your work alot.:) its looking very good btw, you are obviously skilled at this. keep it up!
evil sloth - that is looking sweet! i will never know how one can master that style of yours, i could and will never do that. i have a slight problem with that foot being in that totally from the side-position... i think it might need to go a tad further down too. very much nit picking here tho.:D
haxxxor - i would like to see a bit more variations in colorscheme within the character, and within the background. colorwize, they are two blocks, the green one and the orange-purple-ish one. I'd say incorporate some more colors into the character, and make the environment closer to the "camera" match up a bit more with the her. i really like that devilish smile of hers! brings life to the whole thing.

a little story:
it's settled in the near future- she is a women who was betrayed by her men, a big boss of the water industry (there are wars because of the water).
he was also the top of his state (new germania)... he wanted her executed.
but although a train cut her into pieces, she has survived.
now she wants revange and the first place to begin with that is where she should have died!1e2qwrhfwsidfh

hmmm.. snap! i think i still need some more time! would be very nice if you could change the deadline :/ well, here's mine so far. i made a new one.. i wanted to have simple forms and kind of cartoon-rendering. but i also wanted to add some realistic details and highlights. greez, jmh

Alrighty, final, done in pen and colored pencil. Her head's too big, and the background sucks, but anyone that can see anything else, critique away! :)

This looks curiously like a Space Marine with a combi-bolter! :P Finish those fingers, you, keep working at it. I'm not allowed to participate in these, but I think you all here are doing a great job.

gunnarsson - thanks for the crit! and your a right... there are a lot aspects in anatomy that are wrong and i didn't used ref for it. i think in a week or two i will correct it...i don't want to work on it for now.
and... your final looks fantastic!
realitychek - look up the anatomy of your character. at first view i would say that the legs are too short. i know that i suck in anatomy too, but just practise it.
Haxxxor - your entry looks good. but i think the face is a little bit strange...it seems to me that the face and espacially the nose, is very flat.
ps: sorry for my english :)
