View Full Version : IDW #48: Heavy Lifter

Topic: Heavy Lifter
Background: This topic is wide open, I'd like to see a lot of interpretations this round. The only criteria is that the device should be able to lift heavy objects and loads. The devices can range from those hundred-wheeled platforms to lift buildings, to heavy duty helicopters and even a forklift or human exo-skelet to enhance strength.
Brief:
1. Design an device to lift/move heavy loads.
2. That's it :)
Deadline: Thursday October 25 2007

well that certainly looks interesting. i think i may've just gotten something pretty good for a lifter, we'll see how it renders as the week progresses though.

Legato: Just make sure you don't miss out on round 50. As for round 49, any suggestions for something boring :P?

i'll be back in time for 50 for sure, and my 49 suggestion was a joke :P
i just don't wanna miss anything good... and quite frankly as of late they have all been good :D

Sketch - Heavy lifter

Thinking I might go for some kind of crazy (and ignoring physics) 30's style heavy lifting aircraft.
Final version.

D-Holme, I like the thinking behind your design. Stylistically, it reminds me of the skycrane helicopters, but on a much larger scale of course. Retro-inspired ideas always make me happy too, heh!

i'm starting to finish up my concept, not really happy with it but i might as well do it to get better at rendering. meh.
ANYHOW. anyone who's stumped or lacking information here's some stuff you might find interesting. Without further ado i present you:

Hi! yoitisi Thanks for the liners advise in previous round
D-Holme 30's style is great!!
After a couple of crazy ideas I'm workin in this thing. Inspired on Sikorsky S-64 Skycrane. Maybe bigger nozzles would fit better to topic but I think 4 jet engines in this size would be powerful enough. I'll try to finish some more artistic.
By the way, I'll be on 50.
How about doing something based in XIX century technology for 49? Maybe not boring enough

Gus the Robot - I think that it really could do with the extra time on the details. Some of the areas on the main image just look a little too rough, I think the sub-sketches will represent better as either linesplans or much more cleaned-up images as the moment they are too rough to see much and distract from the main image.
Zutiola - I like the clean style of the lines and highlights. My only critque would be to maybe show some more detail of the lifting gear, possibley some suggestion of winches around the hook - but maybe if it is just a lifting hook then it wouldn't need it.
WIP added (above) - just laid some quick colours down but I am really unhappy with how it is looking, I've started to rework the image but I haven't got too far and what I have done seems to have got lost in the resizing (bother). Well still got a little time to try to make it less embrassing.
Wondering how to best bring across that aero-metallic finish and enough detail to be interesting when I've ended up so far 'zoomed-out'.

D-Holme thanx for comments
I think you're right, the hook needs something around

Definitely, bigger engines are better.

Hmm I though I'd leave the thread open for an extra day in the hope that there would be more entries, but it seems this'll be it for this week. I'll leave it open for a couple more hours, just to make sure :)

Yes - a bit more time would be useful as work has rather caught up with me this week but if everyone else is finished and I'm not then it's my own lookout.

I'm absolutely agree with D-Holme! With a little more time I would give mine some detail.
D-Holme maybe you can use this for that metallic finish, when I try to do something made of metal I think about what is around it, there is always an horizon line with objects or dust, clouds,... and it has a reflection on the metallic surface. Once you have that idea you can place that reflections, as much detail and color, more polished is the surface.

Just as an example, here I leave the reflections as shadows.
Hope it may help

Final version done - not very happy with it but I think that the time has come to finish.
Zutaiola - looks tidy, I like the effect of the canopy.
Yoitisi - thank you for the bit of extra time.

I'm going to keep on rendering but I assume that there is no more time.
Thanks for the extra time yoitisi :madchef:
D-Holme hey! I can't see your final work! it would be a pity, I liked a lot that idea

Yes my hosting seems to be down, not sure why. The link should still work when it comes back up.
Rehosted it elsewhere so it should be working now.

Yes, I think it should work. I hope so.
Maybe you should try to put it up in another server, just in case
It's finished I think. I'm not really happy with trails but I don't master how to do heat distortion.
Any critic or suggestion will be appreciated.

Zutaiola - nice. I like the futuristic Sikorsky.
There is an aircraft graveyard/museum near Mojave called March field that is great for inspiration and texture pics if anyone is close - heard there was even a bigger collection of aircraft bones in phoenix somewhere.

deviousg thanks for that, unfortunately I'm too far at the moment but some day I'll travel to US and I'll visit some of those aircraft graveyards, it has to be amazing for an aeronautics enthusiast.
