How can I get a scholarship if I have a low GPA (high school grades, 2.6) and a one film portfolio (I'm a film studies major at SMC)?

P.S. Parents can't pay tuition and idk if I should file (FAFSA) dependent or independent, I've never had a job but probably will have to work on-campus next year. I don't want to get stuck paying high interest loans.

I'm not sure if I can help you with your first question, but I can tell you about financial aid. If you are just out of high school, then you have to file dependent. Your parents can (and probably will) still claim you as a dependent on their taxes. You can only file independent if you are legally emancipated or over 25 years old [there will be a question in the FAFSA asking what year you were born]. I know many people that are frustrated with this b/c their folks make too much (according to the FAFSA),and they have to wait to be able to claim independent. You just have to find additional means until then. Good luck to you. I hope this helps.

p.s. Talk to the financial aid departments of the schools that you are interested in attending. They may have some additional info.
