"We hiked for hours searching for unseen things, until finally. At the edge of the swamp lye the skull of a mammoth, its massive skull engulfed the swamp around it; it truly has a sight to see."
The prehistoric swamp lands of Skull Island were once the feeding grounds of some of the larges mammals to ever walk the earth. Many travelers enjoy hiking throw the swamp lands in search of such creatures.

Great start to this one everybody!
I'm hoping I have enough time to get this finished. My motion graphics class is devouring my free time! But I'm gonna try my best to crank this one out being that it's my first EOW. :^^:
Still need to throw a skull in there :x , but here's the WIP:

We landed in a swamp, trekked for days; we could feel the savagery, the utter savagery, had closed in around us, all that mysterious life of the wilderness that stirs in the swamp, in the jungles, in the hearts of wild men.
'And this also,' said Marlow suddenly, 'has been one of the dark places of the earth.'

navarrot : very nice speedy, tight execution. As a suggestion , it is not really necesarry , i will play a little more with the light and the atmosphere, maybe it can help you describe the space better
shardana: It is a very good habit to make a set of little thumbnail composition sketches before you actually start to draw the final lllustration. Now , in this sketch you have some elements : the 2 trees in the extreme left and right of your image, very similar in shilouette, size and they are in the same plane (that does not help you explain the space is like , in a conversation you say the same well understood phrase two times, repetition is good but with variation ) and the skull wich is situated very close to the center of image.I know that there is a general opinion that the symmetry is bad for a composition for a couple a good reasons.I partially agree, i only think that the symmetry is a very powerfull tool but very sharp and so very hard to use without cutting yourself :).So in this case you have two options , one is to proceed with the symmety but then you have to compensate the absence of "eye movement on the picture" lacke of dinamism and so on, with a very interesting subject to catch the eye so the composition per overall will not have boring feeling or you can try other composition solutions :) and decide after you have done this.
HFix:nice sketch , i think the tree closest to the viewer is not helping much your composition , it divides the canvas and stop the eye to "wonder" around.
Gaius: very nice work, i think it will help very much your work to play a little bit with the color variation the atmosphere and the light, it is so nice rendered till now :).
P.S:pls excuse my english

Gaius - Amazing picture, very nice composition. I really like your image.

If these are anything to go by this round is gonna be awsome!
navarrot: Love the feel of this...kind of tranquil despite the skull.
shardana: I like the figure out in the open, its a good start. I cant help feeling like its a little too open, though (of course I comment on the wip as is and not how its gonna be), are you going to put a few more trees in the middle?...[Oh I just read Dan's comment...that too;)]
HFix: I like the widescreen aspect but the colours feel a lil dull at the mo keep at it:)
Brandon I really like the low angle! feels like your so close to the water
Gaius: Freekin sweet..awsome angle and very cool colour combo, I can't help feeling that the upper left (as we see it) tooth is a little wonky...looks like it should be higher?...you've also made me realize my vines are a little to uniform, will have to go back to them later:P

DAN: Thank you very much for all the suggestions you wrote. I really appreciate participating in conceptart.org because of people like you. We are here to learn, at least I see it this way :)
BRANDON: For me is very difficult to end an image without including all the important elements from the very beginning. I think is more complicated to include some elements when some others are very close to the end.
GAIUS: Love your entry. Just a question: Could you explain a bit why did you twist the hole composition? I think that the way is it adds dinamism to the viewer. Maybe putting it horizontal will transmit a more quiet an mistery scene.

Navarrot: Way to start things off strong! I really like your concept. And I do try and block in the basic shapes, but my workflow with this one has been quite messy (as you can see here). So I spared the madness since I'd spent some time on the trees, and they were really the only recognizable thing in there at the time.
Gaius: Way to take the trophy before we finish the race  Beautiful concept!
Daveneale: Thank you! Although I must say yours has a much more interesting angle, haha. Great start!
So heres the update. Scribbles and madness included.:^^: Still MUCH to do! Great work so far everyone!

Gaius: Love ur color and mood !!
CeeJay: not a bad start... I guess ur trees are still rather rough but once u work them out, i am sure ur work will be awesome.
Here is mine... I am not intending to work towards a full color work becos i say to myself i am not going to touch color until i get my value study to a higher standard...!!
Legend of Skull Island
This legendary island is well-known throughout the Gydrial Sea as an island to avoid. People go in and never came out. So what fearsome monster live on this island, no one can verify. The name of the island has been passed down for generation, but the origin of the name has been lost. People think that the name came from the strange tree that made up the swampy forest on the island, trees that have crevices and spiny roots that make the tree look like vicious skulls. Little did they know that the name actually came from the skulls of human that the native collect in the crevices of the trees as trophies to offer to their gods....

I haven't yet started an actual WIP but instead sketched out a few ideas of what I might show to indicate that the island is called Skull Island.

Updated mine up top...thanks for the crit, still have a ways to go...and more feedback is welcomed :confident
shardana: like your sketch, the tunnel of trees leading to the skull is a good composition i think.
Gaius: looking good love the color, and tilit camera.
daveneale: like the green colors starting its very dark...maybe thats just my monitor.
Vyse: i like your pirates, the skull is not working for me...more detail or move the flame infront of it more to the right.
Archangel3d: love the concept/story...and the trees and water are looking to be rendered nicely, should be a good peice. looking forward to the finish.
CeeJay: i like what you have started, hope to see it finished.
ace3: love your sketches, hope you finish!!

In the heart of the island nothing lives but the mosquitoes, swarms of them that bite rellentlessly whenever life is near. The air is so humid that your can taste the moisture - dirty, damp, cloying, it stalls your breath.
Here is where the island gets its name... a 30ft high rock carving. Clearly an idol to a death God from some long forgotten tribe. There are similarites to the Easter Island style but much, much darker...

Headquarters for the Bearded Skull band of egalitarian pirates is Skull Island. It has a small inlet which leads deep into the swamp where the pirates live their egalitarian lives in peace funded by their bearded pirate booty. The entrance and shoreline are decorated in old sails ripped to resemble skulls and the inlet is guarded by the docking tree where the ships are stopped and unloaded by a lower-back saving pulley system.

Nice speed paintings everyone, especially Navarrot for it kicking off. This will be my first EOW and hope I can make a good showing in the next few days. Well here's my attempt at a speedy, not quite as far as wanted to get but what'cha gonna do. I decided to go for a reverse angle of you in the skull looking out, not sure if it reads right yet.

Had some time available and made an attemp this afternoon. Lots of good stuff on this thread, and I just loved this theme!
I tried adding color to it but it didn't look nearly as good.
Hope you like it.
EDIT: Ops, forgot the story!
Freelance pirate John Flatfeet was the only survivor to the shipwreck of cozy and compact caravel Nina. After managing to steal one of the boats from the ship, Flatfeet oars through the storm only to find himself ashore a deserted island. Going into the island through a small river, the pirate gets lost in a swamp that stretches as far as the eye can see - and apparently, inhabited by hostile monstrous beasts.

Concept: A pirate captain murders his crew to keep the treasure's location a secret and buries the bodies beneath the nearby trees. In the years that follow the trees are nourished by the dead crewman and developed a taste for human flesh. Upon the captain's return he is in turn killed by the trees leaving the treasure still buried where the skulls lay thickest.

This is a special island where skulls of fallen warriors are brought to honor there sacrifice. At night you can see the glow of the skulls collection at this patch of trees in the center, no one knows why but they always seem to gravitate towards this one point and glow more intensely, until the touch the trees. Then the sky begins to glow brighter with each touch.
