i was just wondering how it is possible to achieve that background in photoshop. It looks more washy and real than the usual brush and some colours are mixed with every stroke.

thats done in painter, or artrage. some artists use a combination of these as well as photoshop

it'd be fairly simple to do this in PS....Id suggest that it's more the colour choice than the brush that gives the effect of the washyness-I just did this to demonstrate...this is with a natural brush with the opacity set to pen pressure (other dynamics) and a natural finish brush also with opacity to pen preasure. Hope thats what your after

actually, you can do that with the smudge brush with finger paint checked.

You can accomplish this effect using several different methods, but a light use of a filter + special brush selection and lowered brush opacity is probably the fastest for the experienced user.
