Well, here´s an initial WIP. But I´m wondering how I´m going to make it obviously robotic. Other than doing something wierd with the eyes, is making the figure too ¨perfect¨obvious enough? Does the figure itself have to be robotic, or would adding some background schematics and technobabble work?

Can someone refer me to somewhere where I can look at more biomech or android-y stuff? I´m kind of thrashing now.

coleb if you need reference, there is loads of referance about if you look around, look at psy-fi films, bladerunner,AI, terminator, aliens films, starwars, I-robot, metropolis, lots of diferent type B-movies, name but a few, and as for book covers and artwork, there is basicly hundreds of images. just look in google, and you will have more than enough referance.

I´m not trying to be argumentative, but it seems to me that the point of the replicants in Bladerunner, the android in Alien and the mechas in AI (though I admit I haven´t seen that one) is that they are indistinguishable, at least at first sight, from humans.

So other than undressing the robot and stamping a bar code on him somewhere (yes, I know it´s already been done), it´s hard to see how you present a ¨gigolo¨in any kind of a social setting. And that raises at least a marketing issue, because if you´re going to go to the trouble of manufacturing an android that´s ¨gallant and charming¨ it should have more applications than an elaborate vibrator.

I´m afraid this is getting tiresome. Sorry. Does an Art Director usually help with these questions?

coleb actually most of the mechas in AI are very recogniseable. And as for undressing him? well why not undress him, or at least partly undress him. Also why does this robotic gigolo have to socially fit in just like any other human, maybe the reason a gigolo is required is not for its beauty and perfect skin, but possible for conversation, or entertainment, or maybe quite simply a glorified vibrator. so therefore outside beauty don't realy come into it. Afterall some of the best reasons why some women prefere a vibrator instead of a guy is simply becouse it doesn't demand anything in return.
Think out of the box, it doesn't hurt ;)

migsta: Very nice start - I like the robot better than the woman, who seems quite flat in comparison. It's a very expressive robot, whose look seems to be "save me from this fate before I punch her out."

daestwen: I like the bot, but there's nothing about this that says gigolo to me. The first of many robots smoking. Odd. I like the clear stomach bubble - well done. I think the bot's left arm is too long.

sony: What's the robot part? Hm. Is the figure the woman? I think it probably is. So the robot is the other shape. While the style is intriguing, I don't really read what's going on.

oblio: I like the feel, but you do need more mech. Perhaps a series of status lights on his neck. The gigolo part isn't that clear either. The pink slippers are curious...

powleyman: Her head doesn't seem deep enough to me, despite the style. I like the negative-space strap of her dress, though it's not matched on the other side. If he's sitting, you could move him to the left a bit and show some of his leg on the other side of the woman's head. Not sure what that would do to the composition, but I imagine you're already past that part.

craftysquid: I like this one a lot. The robot part is subtle and the suave look and pose contrasts with the cheesy aspects, like the endowment. I can't tell what's in his hand - a lighter?

executivetransvestite: It's Rosie from the Jetson's, gone bad.

darkardaur: What he's doing with his hands doesn't read well for me. I see the holographic part, which looks cool. The foot he's standing on should be more foreshortened.

emendez: His right arm and hand are very nice. I like the "hair" also.

newman: Nice job, especially for one hour.

matthew campell: The flowers are a nice touch. Makes me wonder if you were at Comic-Con this year - there was a guy wandering the exhibit hall floor with a working TV for a head. It was showing movie previews. I'm still not sure how they set it up. I also like the drab nature - I hope you don't add too many colors.

fuuryoku: Sorry, I wasn't looking at the robot. The only things I'm seeing others have mentioned already (e.g. hand and arm).

acro: His cup isn't working - it might be tangents with the bar in the background, but I don't even read it as a separate shape. As far as my entry, I figured that a gigolo-bot would be owned by someone. That someone would have to take it out of the box, set it up, and so on. So, the thing has an instruction manual just like a stereo. This is the page in the manual that diagrams out all the features, and the writing on it is the owner having to call tech support. There's an attract mode (like video games) to pull in the customers, and so on. In the end, the owner junked the bot and threw the manual away. I drew and inked the figure and the heads, and also did the writing. Everything else I did in Visio - a vector graphics and charting program. One other detail: turning one ear controls speed, turning the other how hard the robot is doing whatever it's doing. Any guess on why that would be the ears? ;)

matthew campell: really nice moody piece, it's got that bladerunner feel. the guy maybe looks a bit too shabby to be a gigolo? could make his clothes a bit better fitting possibly.
acro: i like the energy in this one, but maybe unify the colour scheme a bit.
mime (finals page): great pic, love the neon. bit more prostitute than gigolo though.
emendez + crafty squid: nice concepts, very suave!

Hey guys, having been trying to make something for this CHOW. The are many good entries around here and is nice to see the many interpretations of the same theme.

Anyways, here is my WIP which I hope I can paint tomorrow. As you can see my pencil work is very dirty because of the many corrections made when I draw without reference. except for the girl holding the leg which was based on the Aqua Team movie poster. There are so many anatomy problems, which shows my poor knowledge of anatomy :D especially with the feet. Probably, I ll trace this to make a cleaner version. Any other comments are welcome.

Don't know too much about the rules, but is it acceptable if I paint this with traditional media? I am thinking about prismacolor pencils and some inking. I just want to get away from the computer for a while :).

Final version
Due to the limited colors I have with each set of pencils I had, used watercolors, prismacolors, markers and woodless color pencils for this. Smudge some parts with a blending stick. Clean it up on Photoshop by deleting the background and some minor parts.


Hopefully the quality is good enough. Though, it looks more like a robot getting lucky and getting some, than the girls getting it on hehehe

grenogs: lol he has a funny hat...there is some proportion and anatomy problems, the feet are to small. The waist and back should be thicker. as for scale, you put him on a beverage glass which suggests that he is tiny and so how exactly is he going to do the thing? if you know what is mean :P also the face is very human compared to the rest of the body, they body looks good with all the joints so try moving some of that to the face.

t i m o t h y: he doesnt feel like a robot to me...he is still very human. and the boots look off to me? one is longer than the other...but i do like the boots they are my favorite think on your design.

lasth: i love your peice...its very effective for the topic. girls like cute little creatures and this little guy is super cute!

mime: i like the pink glow stuff its very nice. the one think that bothers me is were do his feet go..through the floor? the guy doesnt feel robot to me, but he is cyber space gigolo or something with his head gear.

ACRO: your robot is to pimp, the image is very 2d. you have a lot of values on the lights of the roof, so bring those values contrast into the rest of the peice. darker shadows, more contrast. i think that red glass he is holding is very well done and also very eye catching, my eyes goes to that and not the characters. also you have nice joints on the arms and i think you should bring that joint idea down to the hands and fingers. also the shadows on the floor are very harsh, for the shadows to be that dark there has to be a very strong light hitting them both on the top of the head, so soften those up alot the edges are to hard and make them less black.

Matthew Campbell: your character is not very appealing as a gigolo. a gigolo is a womens escort he should be confident and appealing. your character looks like a loser that just got dumped...

hfix you see the funny hat, well take another look,its not a hat, its his head, infact its his pleasure head, lol. now do you understand how he does his thing.;) feet, back and waiste being to small? have you ever hered of skinny people, remember this is a robot, so he doesnt carry excess fat or thick skin like an average human. As for the face being human? well it has to have some sort of humanity, no matter how ugly, otherwise hes just another calculator. And your comment about some proportion and anatomy problems? yes, your probably right, ;)
Also you mentioned that he is very small, well yes he is, but have you ever considered that he may actualy be normal human size and its the glass that is big. Or possibly even, everything is normal size, but im just using artist licence in order to create a certain mood, and that the kangaroo has got nothing to do with the final image ;)

Actually he has no feet. A company is manufacturing those robots/cyborgs , assembling mechanical parts with real body parts and they are selling them as male prostitute for red light districts. So they don't have any need for feet they just have to stay in their small room and wait for customers. He can still stand up but he won't go very far if he ever wanted to run away from his little work space.
The screen is not a headgear, but they are manufactured like this, with a realistic mouth and tongue (might be useful to the girls) and a screen instead of the upper face, on the screen the customer can ask the robot to display whatever she/he wants, like a famous people face, or mayne a movie (having sex whild watching Titanic maybe ?) or anything twisted, whatever suits the customer :p

"Guarantee free of diseased organs, body parts are taken only from healthy and vigorous people." which makes him less robot to me...i bet this guy smells really nasty :P

don't worry for him, there is no conscience left and this isn't a guy, but a mechanical skeleton with fleshy parts arounds with no consciousness left.
Maybe this is more a cyborg than a robot then, I don't know, but it is still a machine.

For me the terminator for example is a robot, but he still have flesh and bloody parts around the metal skeleton. In my gigolo's case the fleshy parts might be real flesh, but the overall character is still a machine.
About the smell, the engineers who build those robots found a way to use flesh without having it decay, the goal is still to have something useful to women even if it is a bit creepy. The makers want the product to earn them money, and for this they need to have customers :)

I can see why you don't see him as a robot, maybe my own definition of robot isn't accurate, but I don't think that a robot has to be all in metal, even on the outside. The robots in A.I for example are really life like on the outside, with synthetic tissues that really looks like flesh. The terminator also looks like a real human until it is wounded, and robocop has a real human face attached to his robotic parts.

I bet like everyone else when I read this topic I though of Jude Law in AI, so I went with more of humanoid look. As for the boots, they are pretty rad, lol, but the anatomy is off, and the pose is a bit static I would definetly agree. Thanks for the crit!

In France what we call a Gigolo is more like a plain male prostitute, you pay for sex and that's pretty much it.

Acro Thanks for the comment man. I guess that the thing about the head you mentioned was the bra of one of the girls (you can guess which one ;) ), which maybe wasn't that visible in the first dirty sketch. Good job on yours, I agree that you could push the values more. Nevertheless, like the expression in your character and also that you did a girl with a more common type of body instead of the super model one, makes it more credible. Also, I notice that in your final you flip horizontally the picture and now you have the Z-69 symbol backwards.

(By the way, this is intended to be a "dark comedy" piece, i don't really think of women, (or men) this way. I guess this piece pokes fun at both...

realy nice image , nice camera angle, and great lighting, reminds me of those 50's advertisements :) there is a few things slightly wrong, but their so minut and in a weeks time im sure you will notice things yourself so their realy not worth mentioning. i only have one slightly major concern, where is his left leg? i think you need to find a way to show it more, becouse at the moment, it looks like he only has the one, apart from that, i realy like it

Scottmcd: I have changed the design quite a bit, basically it’s an out fitted flesh bot. made with silicon flesh and inside the power of motors for extreme pleasures and a charming personality.
Acro: I have changed the design quite a bit, the pear looking object was a silicon based object for female pleasure and it was scale able. About the banner I was going for a captain z69 sort of thing which I just dropped for this concept. :)

B-Man: Thanks for the props, I thought about that too, about the claws. My approach to this was that when Robotic Gigolos become a common place item on the red light district, it won't matter what the bot looks like, just as long as it can get the job done.

But I do agree, I feel like my entry is a bit out of place among all the good looking sensual mechas. I was also looking from a Futurama point of view, Calculon is the greatest lover the universe has ever known.

Wow its going to be hard to decide my top three favorite.

Tom Garden I love the closeup great colors. it over all looks fantastic! only thing i dont care for is his outfit, though rendered beautifully it just doesnt fit my taste for a gigolo. Great job though!

Corspufo Like it alot! his personality reminds me of Bender from Futurama. I love the shot of the hips and the girl. I thought the human looking head would have looked a lot better on it and maybe making his fingers a little more sensual. Two thumbs up!

Sony i like your style overall but it seems like theres somthing missing. The thing on his stomach is distracting. to me at least.

Sturnus Very likable robot. I love how his face is painted on his tin can head. Im guessing he works with robot costumers? only crit is his hands and feet, they seem a bit to small.
