Z-69 the Robotic Gigolo
Hey Oblio, here's my topic for ChoW:
Hope ya like.

This is a page from an instruction booklet that was found in a trash can, along with several body parts...
I may make the whole thing bigger, but I don't know if I'll actually have time. The figure and heads were penciled, then inked. I assembled the page in Visio and scanned the writing.

I'm kind of surprised to be first with a sketch, but then, I saw this about thirty seconds after Oblio posted it. ^^; Here it goes.
He's kind of androgynous, but girls (including myself) kind of like that, so...
August 20th, 2007, 07:06 PM
fed fed fed...i feel like i owe you a finished chow..seeing as i made you do the one that you won last week!!!
August 20th, 2007, 07:25 PM
update: sorry for not posting sketches, i dont think my thumbnails were legible enough. Heres what i came up with, I tried to hint to the idea of him having multiple body parts and "appendages" but i didnt have time to paint in rows of faces and abs and other parts on racks. Apologies, i think this could have been better but this week was busy.

basically it’s an out fitted flesh bot. made with silicon flesh and inside the power of motors for extreme pleasures and a charming personality.

Hey there Everybody. Here's what I've roughed in so far.
August 22nd, 2007, 09:45 AM
Powlyman, good start but watch out for the rules stating you must show 3/4 of the body!:S
August 22nd, 2007, 01:05 PM
Yikes! Thanks for reminding me Tom.
August 22nd, 2007, 04:51 PM

lmao... Eddie Izzard is a good man...
August 23rd, 2007, 04:44 PM
First time posting here. Just thought I'd join you guys so I keep myself drawing everyday. Here's a WIP.
August 23rd, 2007, 06:34 PM
Well, here´s an initial WIP. But I´m wondering how I´m going to make it obviously robotic. Other than doing something wierd with the eyes, is making the figure too ¨perfect¨obvious enough? Does the figure itself have to be robotic, or would adding some background schematics and technobabble work?
Can someone refer me to somewhere where I can look at more biomech or android-y stuff? I´m kind of thrashing now.
August 23rd, 2007, 07:11 PM
I think it has to be robotic because if you take away the background it will not be a robotic gigolo anymore.
August 24th, 2007, 01:37 AM
coleb if you need reference, there is loads of referance about if you look around, look at psy-fi films, bladerunner,AI, terminator, aliens films, starwars, I-robot, metropolis, lots of diferent type B-movies, name but a few, and as for book covers and artwork, there is basicly hundreds of images. just look in google, and you will have more than enough referance.
August 24th, 2007, 05:04 AM
I´m not trying to be argumentative, but it seems to me that the point of the replicants in Bladerunner, the android in Alien and the mechas in AI (though I admit I haven´t seen that one) is that they are indistinguishable, at least at first sight, from humans.
So other than undressing the robot and stamping a bar code on him somewhere (yes, I know it´s already been done), it´s hard to see how you present a ¨gigolo¨in any kind of a social setting. And that raises at least a marketing issue, because if you´re going to go to the trouble of manufacturing an android that´s ¨gallant and charming¨ it should have more applications than an elaborate vibrator.
I´m afraid this is getting tiresome. Sorry. Does an Art Director usually help with these questions?
August 24th, 2007, 05:32 AM
coleb actually most of the mechas in AI are very recogniseable. And as for undressing him? well why not undress him, or at least partly undress him. Also why does this robotic gigolo have to socially fit in just like any other human, maybe the reason a gigolo is required is not for its beauty and perfect skin, but possible for conversation, or entertainment, or maybe quite simply a glorified vibrator. so therefore outside beauty don't realy come into it. Afterall some of the best reasons why some women prefere a vibrator instead of a guy is simply becouse it doesn't demand anything in return.
Think out of the box, it doesn't hurt ;)
August 24th, 2007, 09:24 AM
ARGGH! only gave myself my lunchbreak to do this
note to self: 1 hour is not enough to do a decent Chow entry!
hope it's okay as it is.:
August 24th, 2007, 12:26 PM
Poweful piece newman! I wonder about one thing though: what makes a girl dig a guy with a head like a tupperware bowl? Or is that part of the appeal?
August 24th, 2007, 12:33 PM
i think his appeal lies in his wit and conversation skills.
not to mention his oversize custom groinal attachment.
August 24th, 2007, 12:42 PM
i dunno what she digs in him.. but im diggin her boobahs :D
nice work Newman - JAG
August 24th, 2007, 01:00 PM
Very nice work Newman but I was wondering how does he smoke the cigar?
August 24th, 2007, 01:07 PM
Here's an early preview. I've just started colouring it, but thought I'd post this version in case there are any glaring faults I may have missed. The screen on it's head is going to have some sort of face displayed on it.
August 24th, 2007, 02:09 PM
Hey all - updated page 1 (at top) with my final & would appreciate any C&C's. I'll do my own round of comments this evening...
August 24th, 2007, 02:35 PM
doesnt seem to be much activity here compared to last week. either people are finding this one a little difficult, or their keeping their ideas safe to their chests and its going to be a mad rush towards the end.
August 24th, 2007, 03:04 PM
I may try to sneak one this in over the weekend, but it's been hell here at work all week so time may not allow it. I have a sketch done monday, but haven't managed to lay any color on it yet at all.
August 24th, 2007, 03:18 PM
nice sketch you got there fuuryoku, just 2 crits though, her left arm looks slightly strange, maybe its to big, also i think her right hand looks slightly to big to be a womans hand. Apart from that it looks great, reminds me of something from a 60's-70's b-movie :)
August 24th, 2007, 03:37 PM
waking up and coming back to the image ive decided to take replace the cup and take away the damn bathroom sign
August 24th, 2007, 04:23 PM
some nice progress goodluck to everyone! hopefully i can participate lots of other work at the moment :[
newman: i really like what you started...some crit...i love the sleevless tux idea, i dont know if ill have time to participate but i was sketching ideas of having a jacket on mine but didnt want to hide the arm design..so your peice was very interesting...also the cigar, he can smoke it?? lol and the robot has a nice gold/copper color except on the tummy? also the knee on the robot looks belt funny...other than that its very nice :rendered:
Migsta: fantastic design of the robot...he is very appealing and has a charming eye gaze. cant wait for the finish should be nice :confident
HFix Sketchbook (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=104569)

mathew campbell - good start diggin the idea a lot and the characters design is crazy. i like it and hope to see it finished
fuuryoku - i like the body of the character but his head looks weird... maybe colord it will be easier to notice.... good sketch non the less
CRITIQUED OTHERS - critique back is appreciated
August 24th, 2007, 05:39 PM
Grenogs: yeah, that arm bugs the hell out of me too, but I literally haven't had any sketchtime this week to get back to it and fix it. The bot's head looks a little off kilter too thanks to my effed up astygmatic eyes, though not to as bothersome a degree.
August 24th, 2007, 09:22 PM
I'm going with Deuce Bigalow meets terminator...jk
wip something like this
August 24th, 2007, 10:24 PM
migsta: Very nice start - I like the robot better than the woman, who seems quite flat in comparison. It's a very expressive robot, whose look seems to be "save me from this fate before I punch her out."
daestwen: I like the bot, but there's nothing about this that says gigolo to me. The first of many robots smoking. Odd. I like the clear stomach bubble - well done. I think the bot's left arm is too long.
sony: What's the robot part? Hm. Is the figure the woman? I think it probably is. So the robot is the other shape. While the style is intriguing, I don't really read what's going on.
oblio: I like the feel, but you do need more mech. Perhaps a series of status lights on his neck. The gigolo part isn't that clear either. The pink slippers are curious...
powleyman: Her head doesn't seem deep enough to me, despite the style. I like the negative-space strap of her dress, though it's not matched on the other side. If he's sitting, you could move him to the left a bit and show some of his leg on the other side of the woman's head. Not sure what that would do to the composition, but I imagine you're already past that part.
craftysquid: I like this one a lot. The robot part is subtle and the suave look and pose contrasts with the cheesy aspects, like the endowment. I can't tell what's in his hand - a lighter?
executivetransvestite: It's Rosie from the Jetson's, gone bad.
darkardaur: What he's doing with his hands doesn't read well for me. I see the holographic part, which looks cool. The foot he's standing on should be more foreshortened.
emendez: His right arm and hand are very nice. I like the "hair" also.
newman: Nice job, especially for one hour.
matthew campell: The flowers are a nice touch. Makes me wonder if you were at Comic-Con this year - there was a guy wandering the exhibit hall floor with a working TV for a head. It was showing movie previews. I'm still not sure how they set it up. I also like the drab nature - I hope you don't add too many colors.
fuuryoku: Sorry, I wasn't looking at the robot. The only things I'm seeing others have mentioned already (e.g. hand and arm).
acro: His cup isn't working - it might be tangents with the bar in the background, but I don't even read it as a separate shape. As far as my entry, I figured that a gigolo-bot would be owned by someone. That someone would have to take it out of the box, set it up, and so on. So, the thing has an instruction manual just like a stereo. This is the page in the manual that diagrams out all the features, and the writing on it is the owner having to call tech support. There's an attract mode (like video games) to pull in the customers, and so on. In the end, the owner junked the bot and threw the manual away. I drew and inked the figure and the heads, and also did the writing. Everything else I did in Visio - a vector graphics and charting program. One other detail: turning one ear controls speed, turning the other how hard the robot is doing whatever it's doing. Any guess on why that would be the ears? ;)
August 25th, 2007, 01:15 AM
Cool stuff so far.
ACRO: Your robot seems more Pimp than Gigolo. Though I like how curvy and meaty your girl is.
Newman: Killer stuff dude. I agree, with your earlier comment, conversational skills always win over the ladies, plus customizable dork doesn't hurt either.
August 25th, 2007, 04:54 AM
Hi all. sorry i don't have time to offer crit to everyone who's posted so far, but here's a few:
matthew campell: really nice moody piece, it's got that bladerunner feel. the guy maybe looks a bit too shabby to be a gigolo? could make his clothes a bit better fitting possibly.
acro: i like the energy in this one, but maybe unify the colour scheme a bit.
mime (finals page): great pic, love the neon. bit more prostitute than gigolo though.
emendez + crafty squid: nice concepts, very suave!
good luck everyone!
p.s. what would be the point of a robot smoking? its just for posing!
August 25th, 2007, 07:34 AM
Nice work so far everyone !
This is my first participation to the CHOW, it is very fun :p
Matthew Campbell : I guess we had the same idea, look at what I posted in the finished picture thread yesterday, the screen can show whatever face the client wants :p
Here is my finished version, I already posted it in the finished thread but I thought that I might show it here too.
August 25th, 2007, 08:37 AM
very nice everyone
August 25th, 2007, 12:56 PM
Hello everyone, I don't post a lot, but I very often take a look. Mime show me this thread, so...
August 25th, 2007, 01:00 PM
your one's great lasth!
for some reason it's not showing up for me in this thread, but i saw it on the finals page. love the hands!
August 25th, 2007, 03:42 PM
Thanks for the CC Scott and Acro (the smoke was just a placeholder :P). Im extremely busy this week and havnt gotten a chance to work on mine, very sorry but i probably wont have a final this round unless i can whip somthing up over night.
Good work everyone!
Newman i like yours alot hes got style, with his sleevless tux and fatty cigar (which i imagine goes *TINK* everytime he trys to take a drag), what a stud!
Mime Nice concept! makes me wish i was a robotic gigolo, if you know what im sayin. :P
Lasth He seems to be more of a cute sextoy then a gigolo but i like it nontheless. Hes like a manajatwa* machine!
August 25th, 2007, 04:39 PM
no doubt powleyman
you critiqued others cant get no critique back?
August 26th, 2007, 12:49 AM
Sorry ACRO i was heading out the door to a wedding when i posted. A medieval themed wedding, was very cool.
Anyways, ACRO I liked the new cup a lot better but like somone else said he does look more like a pimp than a gigolo. I do like your girl though.
August 26th, 2007, 01:12 AM
Hey guys, having been trying to make something for this CHOW. The are many good entries around here and is nice to see the many interpretations of the same theme.
Anyways, here is my WIP which I hope I can paint tomorrow. As you can see my pencil work is very dirty because of the many corrections made when I draw without reference. except for the girl holding the leg which was based on the Aqua Team movie poster. There are so many anatomy problems, which shows my poor knowledge of anatomy :D especially with the feet. Probably, I ll trace this to make a cleaner version. Any other comments are welcome.
Don't know too much about the rules, but is it acceptable if I paint this with traditional media? I am thinking about prismacolor pencils and some inking. I just want to get away from the computer for a while :).
Edit: upload a clean up version
Due to the limited colors I have with each set of pencils I had, used watercolors, prismacolors, markers and woodless color pencils for this. Smudge some parts with a blending stick. Clean it up on Photoshop by deleting the background and some minor parts.
Hopefully the quality is good enough. Though, it looks more like a robot getting lucky and getting some, than the girls getting it on hehehe

August 26th, 2007, 10:11 AM
newman - i love the walking pose on yours, dopecore \w/
August 26th, 2007, 10:51 AM
just a few more things to finish on here, but basicly done, colours are looking a lot more vivid on there than my laptop for some reason :(
August 26th, 2007, 11:09 AM
Newman : I love yours, the posing is great and he is really cool !
about mine, I looked up on the wiktionnary before for Gigolo, to be sure, and it seems that this can can be either an escort or a prostitute, or both ( http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/gigolo )
grenogs : nice idea, I like it :)
lasth : very cute, and yet it seems very effective :p
August 26th, 2007, 12:04 PM
yo thanks for the feedback powleyman
i realized that i did create a pimp and not a Gigolo.
i might attempt the z69 robotic gigolo again
and keep that in mind from the beginning.
almadon - diggin your pic but not the robots head!
timothy - haha he suppose to be a male stripper?
grenogs- i dont like his scalp.... uhhh disgustin haha
August 26th, 2007, 03:33 PM
grenogs: lol he has a funny hat...there is some proportion and anatomy problems, the feet are to small. The waist and back should be thicker. as for scale, you put him on a beverage glass which suggests that he is tiny and so how exactly is he going to do the thing? if you know what is mean :P also the face is very human compared to the rest of the body, they body looks good with all the joints so try moving some of that to the face.
t i m o t h y: he doesnt feel like a robot to me...he is still very human. and the boots look off to me? one is longer than the other...but i do like the boots they are my favorite think on your design.
lasth: i love your peice...its very effective for the topic. girls like cute little creatures and this little guy is super cute!
mime: i like the pink glow stuff its very nice. the one think that bothers me is were do his feet go..through the floor? the guy doesnt feel robot to me, but he is cyber space gigolo or something with his head gear.
ACRO: your robot is to pimp, the image is very 2d. you have a lot of values on the lights of the roof, so bring those values contrast into the rest of the peice. darker shadows, more contrast. i think that red glass he is holding is very well done and also very eye catching, my eyes goes to that and not the characters. also you have nice joints on the arms and i think you should bring that joint idea down to the hands and fingers. also the shadows on the floor are very harsh, for the shadows to be that dark there has to be a very strong light hitting them both on the top of the head, so soften those up alot the edges are to hard and make them less black.
Matthew Campbell: your character is not very appealing as a gigolo. a gigolo is a womens escort he should be confident and appealing. your character looks like a loser that just got dumped...
August 26th, 2007, 04:32 PM
hfix you see the funny hat, well take another look, its not a hat, its his head, infact its his pleasure head, lol. now do you understand how he does his thing.;) feet, back and waiste being to small? have you ever hered of skinny people, remember this is a robot, so he doesnt carry excess fat or thick skin like an average human. As for the face being human? well it has to have some sort of humanity, no matter how ugly, otherwise hes just another calculator. And your comment about some proportion and anatomy problems? yes, your probably right, ;)
Also you mentioned that he is very small, well yes he is, but have you ever considered that he may actualy be normal human size and its the glass that is big. Or possibly even, everything is normal size, but im just using artist licence in order to create a certain mood, and that the kangaroo has got nothing to do with the final image ;)
August 26th, 2007, 04:42 PM
i know what the hat is...didnt know i had to spell out that i liked his PENIS HAT... anyways you dont have to take my comments...they are just what i see from MY perspective and you dont have to defend yourself so much...as for the size thing it makes more sense with the description in the finals thread, i was just telling you what i thought at the time that i saw it. so chill im not trying to destroy your artistic license.
August 26th, 2007, 04:48 PM
HFix, thank you for the comments.
Actually he has no feet. A company is manufacturing those robots/cyborgs , assembling mechanical parts with real body parts and they are selling them as male prostitute for red light districts. So they don't have any need for feet they just have to stay in their small room and wait for customers. He can still stand up but he won't go very far if he ever wanted to run away from his little work space.
The screen is not a headgear, but they are manufactured like this, with a realistic mouth and tongue (might be useful to the girls) and a screen instead of the upper face, on the screen the customer can ask the robot to display whatever she/he wants, like a famous people face, or mayne a movie (having sex whild watching Titanic maybe ?) or anything twisted, whatever suits the customer :p
August 26th, 2007, 06:41 PM
mime, wow thats really creepy...i feel sorry for the guy, so he is made of the best parts, so he is a bunch of dead people all put together? "Guarantee free of diseased organs, body parts are taken only from healthy and vigorous people." which makes him less robot to me...i bet this guy smells really nasty :P
August 26th, 2007, 06:54 PM
don't worry for him, there is no conscience left and this isn't a guy, but a mechanical skeleton with fleshy parts arounds with no consciousness left.
Maybe this is more a cyborg than a robot then, I don't know, but it is still a machine.
For me the terminator for example is a robot, but he still have flesh and bloody parts around the metal skeleton. In my gigolo's case the fleshy parts might be real flesh, but the overall character is still a machine.
About the smell, the engineers who build those robots found a way to use flesh without having it decay, the goal is still to have something useful to women even if it is a bit creepy. The makers want the product to earn them money, and for this they need to have customers :)
I can see why you don't see him as a robot, maybe my own definition of robot isn't accurate, but I don't think that a robot has to be all in metal, even on the outside. The robots in A.I for example are really life like on the outside, with synthetic tissues that really looks like flesh. The terminator also looks like a real human until it is wounded, and robocop has a real human face attached to his robotic parts.

August 26th, 2007, 06:58 PM
ACRO - Ha! Yea, something like that, why you looking for a dance? :)
HFIX -Thanks for the input, yea he's definetly more "cyborg" than robot. I was thinking though, what woman would want to pay to bang a robot. ya know? I bet like everyone else when I read this topic I though of Jude Law in AI, so I went with more of humanoid look. As for the boots, they are pretty rad, lol, but the anatomy is off, and the pose is a bit static I would definetly agree. Thanks for the crit!
August 26th, 2007, 07:05 PM
a gigolo is a womens escort he should be confident and appealing
I'm not sure about that, there might be several definitions.
In France what we call a Gigolo is more like a plain male prostitute, you pay for sex and that's pretty much it.
A women's escort would be called ... well an escort :p
August 26th, 2007, 08:26 PM
Just uploaded my final.
Acro Thanks for the comment man. I guess that the thing about the head you mentioned was the bra of one of the girls (you can guess which one ;) ), which maybe wasn't that visible in the first dirty sketch. Good job on yours, I agree that you could push the values more. Nevertheless, like the expression in your character and also that you did a girl with a more common type of body instead of the super model one, makes it more credible. Also, I notice that in your final you flip horizontally the picture and now you have the Z-69 symbol backwards.
August 26th, 2007, 09:00 PM
He is anyone you ever knew - He can read into your thoughts and brainwaves to see who you truely loved or completely lusted after in your lifetime - and then has the abilty to imitate a perfect version of that person. Its the ultimate visitation to your hidden fantasies and darkest kept secrets about those who you REALLY care about.
August 26th, 2007, 09:50 PM
Tom garden I hate you!!! Now I have to abandon my concept!! AGH!
August 26th, 2007, 11:09 PM
Tom: Killer work dude. I like how you've done the face under the hood.
August 26th, 2007, 11:54 PM
In the future, prostitution has become a multi-trillion dollar business. Now with the swipe of your national ID card, a romantic interlude is a bio-metric fingerprint away! No longer will women fear disease, rape, loneliness... or commitment! Proven to reduce population and to virtually eliminate tension in the working class, robotic gigolos prove to be the ultimate solution for appeasing the masses.
(By the way, this is intended to be a "dark comedy" piece, i don't really think of women, (or men) this way. I guess this piece pokes fun at both...
I know this needs a lot of work, and would appreciate crits. Once again, thanks for the inspiration guys. I'm here for the long haul.
***EDIT*** Thanks for pointing that out grenogs, made a quick fix. Not perfect but the leg reads better, wanted her leg to wrap around his. Punched out the hand a little too.
August 27th, 2007, 12:24 AM
realy nice image , nice camera angle, and great lighting, reminds me of those 50's advertisements :) there is a few things slightly wrong, but their so minut and in a weeks time im sure you will notice things yourself so their realy not worth mentioning. i only have one slightly major concern, where is his left leg? i think you need to find a way to show it more, becouse at the moment, it looks like he only has the one, apart from that, i realy like it
August 27th, 2007, 12:30 AM
lol, i just noticed how she pays for his services, haha, nice idea, add some light reflection onto her hand, that should make it more obvios, becouse at the moment it seems to be lost in the shadows

Scottmcd: I have changed the design quite a bit, basically it’s an out fitted flesh bot. made with silicon flesh and inside the power of motors for extreme pleasures and a charming personality.
Acro: I have changed the design quite a bit, the pear looking object was a silicon based object for female pleasure and it was scale able. About the banner I was going for a captain z69 sort of thing which I just dropped for this concept. :)
here my final

a quickie coldrum!! ARRRGH great work! :) Lovely use of colours and great seethrough jacket! Some of the crazy background is a little distracting tho - maybe mist it out? not sure

Newman: Great job, I like it !
Mime: héhé...sometimes, you're so trash
Powleyman: Is there a strong difference between a cute living toy and a gigolo? :]
HFix: thx you, he looks like cute, but he can be hard too :]
Collinsully: "listening" funny idea !!

corspufo - That thing looks like it was built to torture not to make love. Claw hands, I never met a girl ho likes to be clawed and those twisty things? Hmm... Might be good on a backrub. I think you should think about your concept a bit. That wouldnt sell so good Im afraid.
I like the way you draw anyways just the concept that need some thinking.
Keep it up man! :}

Hi, I'm kinda new here, so this really is my first try at any community activity. Here's the sketch and the final version of my entry at this weeks CHOW.

I have to give an honerable mention to any Frank Zappa fans out there like myself to Sy Borg "This is exciting I never plooked A tiny chrome-plated Machine That looks like a Magical pig With marital aids Stuck all over it Such as yourself Before"
Give joes garage a listen - its a great album! YOU'RE PLOOKING TO HARD!! I WANT TO KISS YOU ALWAYS

Tom Garden: Ditto on Zappa. Huge fan, (except for jazz from hell, a bit too much, even for Zappa.) Also check out Hot Rats, We're Only in it for the Money, One Size Fits All, and The Yellow Shark. *warning music may cause uncontrolled bursts of laughter*

B-Man: Thanks for the props, I thought about that too, about the claws. My approach to this was that when Robotic Gigolos become a common place item on the red light district, it won't matter what the bot looks like, just as long as it can get the job done.
But I do agree, I feel like my entry is a bit out of place among all the good looking sensual mechas. I was also looking from a Futurama point of view, Calculon is the greatest lover the universe has ever known.

Nice One TOM, good colors! (maybe the short leg is a bit short?)
Saturnus, looking good.

Wow its going to be hard to decide my top three favorite.
Tom Garden I love the closeup great colors. it over all looks fantastic! only thing i dont care for is his outfit, though rendered beautifully it just doesnt fit my taste for a gigolo. Great job though!
Corspufo Like it alot! his personality reminds me of Bender from Futurama. I love the shot of the hips and the girl. I thought the human looking head would have looked a lot better on it and maybe making his fingers a little more sensual. Two thumbs up!
Collinsully Great angle! I really dig those colors too man good job. "listening" great idea that was pretty comical.
Sony i like your style overall but it seems like theres somthing missing. The thing on his stomach is distracting. to me at least.
Coldrum Five stars! words can not express the jealousy i have for your skill. "Quickie" he says! :P Great work! I love the concept, robot design, great car and good lighting. Small, Medium and Extra Large for those special ladys, Alright.
Lasth Hehe, no i guess not :)
Sturnus Very likable robot. I love how his face is painted on his tin can head. Im guessing he works with robot costumers? only crit is his hands and feet, they seem a bit to small.
