Yo Steak-tron!
this thread gave me :electric:
chills , this is what i talk about with
my friends, great inspiration on CA Forum
and sure this is inspirational, well after
a short introduction, heres my opinions
hang on:

First i SEE you are geting better and better
each page i see your work improves, you
are one member to keep an eye on

You have potential, correction you are
great artist for creatures and monsters
soooo many great monstruos i saw
very dinamic and fierce

The frogman series you did was hilarious
great character,
(Homers accent)
mmmmm tongue on butt ......

I can see you enjoy Kchen thread too!!!
, i hope we share a good talk at Austin
and hope we meet on the hallways

and you did a sculputure !!! very pro stuff man
my favorite creatures are the one you rendered
with markers great rythim lines excelent !!

APATELOSIS HOPLITES, is an insectoid (is that a word)
design i loved too i like insects and that beettle like
monster is outstanding

but the jewel of this thread was armadillo tank ,
i love Emerson Lake & Palmer progressive music and
this just blowed my mind, if you post that image on
a progressive rock forum you will rock the hell out
of everybody , i just hope your friends band is as good
as the design you made cause like Rich said this tank
is SIIIIIIIIIIICK SIIIIIIIIIIIIICK

Yeah I hope you'll still be going, I'd love to see your sketches in person.:D Anyway that final concept of the armadillo tank/crusadillo whatever is awesome. I really like what you've done with the body/shell of it, and you've fixed the tail. Great values, keep up the awesome work man.

love the dillo tank!
The head's just kind hanging out though. He should shoot lasers from his snout or something. I dunno, it's still awesome ^_^

the greyscale lovechild of tank and armadillo is toterlly badical-radical. And there are few things I like more than crazy monsters wielding baby rattles. holy crap, guy, it's gonna be such an honor to meet you in person. oh yea, I already know you. but I can't wait to see what else you've done. I'm as excited as a crazy monster w/ a baby rattle. ehh.....

That armadillo is your finest piece yet. It's really a quantum leap in your style :chug:
On the other hand I like more and more your women, they seem so mischevious :P

Van: thank you man, I think i forgot to reply to you on the last update. You bring me great encouragment sir and i am very thankful:chug:

metal: thanks man, i wish i could do as much anatomy as you, guess i should get crackin'...

Jackal Anubis: thanks dude. that pencil pic actually does'nt have all the perspective lines. You pretty much have to draw all that stuff out when you do something like that.

Rich: TTTTTTTTTTTTTThanks DDDDDDoGGGGGG!

walker: TTTThanks AS welllllllll.

aum: It's actually the Crusadillo mark 4 mobil howitzer... (said in nerdiest "know it all" voice) No, i call it that because I was looking at the U.S. Crusader II for the look. thanks man.:)

endregen: thank you sir. I would be a genius if i could bio-engineer that

Gabriel: thankyou, that was a heart-warming response. I'm honored that you took to making such a concise message, please, if you have any critiques in the future please don't hesitate to post. I would very much like to meet you in Austin and chat about art (maybee even draw...) Are you staying at the LaQuinta? I sounds like we have the whole hotel booked. I'll put my name on the door or something. cheers!:chug:

dako: i'll be there, thanks man.

Ra Havok: thanks for dropping by! i baked it just for you.

waronmars: thank you. I've been using Simblet's anatomy and lately Leonardo's diagrams. Kchen's thread, and draw, draw, draw. :chug:

artkitty: I was trying to make it like the album cover (sorta) but maybe if it was some sort of mine deterrent... or it could be more rediculous if it was grazing while firing... thanks:D

roy: thanks my man. I'm looking forward to "meeting" you too. "so Roy, we meet agian for the first time, for the last time..." check yo pm's yo' (who is daniel and why do i have to call him?) I'm glad you like the baby goblin too. thanks:chug:

troymcoy: thanks, i'm actually pretty pleased with it (now to color...) Don't worry about backtracking. sometimes i think about starting a new thread...

Yiako: thanks bud, i'm glad you like my ladies too, even tho they need work i keep going back to them... My holy grail is to have a unique pin-up style when i get mo' skills. (sanjack is the champion tho.) :chug:

i'm glad you guys liked the tank. I don't like to post without anything but unfortunately i don't have much for now, just some quickies. This is largely due to my rebuilding of the ol' website which i'll put up after this post.

oh and here's the actual ELP cover
http://www.kempart.com/Artwork%20popups/ELP-Tark.jpg
I have'nt heard it yet but youz guys have good taste so i think i'll give it a listen.

I think I am going to be the first to take advantage of the critfest! And what better person to be my victim than my buddy, steak! :)

Its really hard for me to crit you, thats why I am making myself do it. Your work has always been an inspiration and its hard to try and find faults from my POV. But, I need to be able to help you just like you have helped me in the past.

With that said, after looking at everything I have to say your finished works do not have the movement and style that your sketches do. I dont know if its because you detail them to death or maybe you are *too* careful with your lines. But, your finished stuff seems stiff in comparison to the great fluidity I see in your sketches.

The last Dillo piece is a prime example. Great piece of work, yes. But, a little stiff. Especially compared to the great sketch page you posted right after showing your final.

I dont know how to tell you to fix it. Im just not confident enough in my abilities yet to give you that advice. So, all I can tell you is what I see for now. And thats it!

van: thanks for the crit buddy. You make a very good point. My Illus. teacher talks about capturing the sketch in the final piece. Thats why he uses tracing paper alot. Tracing over sketches is also how i did my exit stuff. I probably went through 4 levels of refinement before the final ink drawing. With the tank I just jumped into the final. I have a package of large vellum just collecting dust... wise words my friend.
too bad you can't make it to Austin (any chance you'll change your mind?.. aye...aye..)

Summer Pudding: ha ha. ;)

Keepiru: but why not in "that way" oh right... on account of the lesbian part. I just can't win.

Kress: wow, thank you. Your work is incredible for lack of a better word, I'm glad you commented in me ol' thread. Maybe I'll see you in Austin? it would be an honor.

So I'm gearing up for my "visual essay" with my illus. teacher. I want to keep concepting but put the ideas in scences. I thought i'd roll with "oil workers of the future". Sort of a comment on the current dependance of the substance and a depiction of the bleake future ahead when it becomes more of a scarce commoditiy. Also a great excuse to draw lots of machinery.

very rough at this point.

Dammit! I am forcing myself to use a pen right now to shake myself up a bit. And, although I love the line it puts down...I am having a big problem sketching with it! I am in awe of your pen sketching...so...any advice for the pen noob?

As for Austin...no chance. I'd love to go, but I just have too many things going on. My wife is an RN and she works on the weekends, so I cant just leave...after all, I have 3 little ones running around.

I guess I could always bring them with me! :p

1. Come back in 1 piece.

hey, I have a question: [ obnoxious southern accent ] how you draw like that? [ /obnoxious southern accent ]
for serious though, I really like the pencil drawings of the models and how you just threw down some value w/out bothering to stay in the lines. the first ink drawing from the night before austin is really nice. However I'd have a hard time calling some of the faces from the last page pretty.
it's clear that you spent more time on rkelly's face, but I like crunchy paul's face better. the coro was saying how less is more when it comes to ink. He said what you don't draw is more important than what you do draw. anyway, his is just one opinion, but crunch's face is my favorite from that last page.
funny how we had to leave the state to hang out, but it was good good times. thanks to you too, guy.

Yina: thanks!, i hope i didd'nt decieve with the pic of elboy, he drew almost the entire time.

stephen:thanks.

art-kelly: I'm glad you like that drawing, it's swim or sink with drawing of other people, luckily you can't really see your face so i could'nt muck up the likeness. (Like i said, more is at stake when your drawing girls) I had fun hanging out, hopefully i'll see you at the ol' GMA or elswhere.

buzz3d: thanks man.

Mindcandyman: It was excellent meeting you too. We pretty much have to have another workshop, even if it's just made of daily sketch books... :chug: cheers man, i wish you the best in all your endeavors and hope we meet agian.

Groova': yea, that was right after you left. Hope you had a good flight man, I'm looking forward to seeing them pretty drawings from the At
lee-er (how you say that?) that you'll make.

metaphysiks: your one of the sharpest (and funniest) people i've met, and lo' and behold, you can draw like a badass. it was great hanging with you in the Austin, I hope its not the last time.

Insane Visions: your sketchbook blew me away even more in person. Thanks for showing me man. it was great meeting you. :chug: (and 2b mechanical pencils are the shit, i bought one as soon as i got home.)

JeffJaws: thanks man, I had to juggle the pose time between drawing and shooting lots of pictures;)

Van: You would have had fun, but... there will be another, bigger, better, faster, bolder... you get the idea. There is already a buzz. Hope to see you there, and thanks for your visits, your the life blood of theses boards.
-oh, and there were other kids there, w/ parents no less. The spectrum of people crossed all boundaries, so bring the family. :btu:

dackoscwash: thanks man, I started using a stadler (precision?) .01 pen for the last two. This let me build layers of hatching for the tones, but for the bigger areas i switched to a .03, otherwise they would have taken an eternity.

roger: thanks for dropping by! :chug:

elboy: i see what your saying, I have to apologize for posting a portrait of you where you look like a tired bum that is'nt drawing. This is, of course, false. but that Coro quote sticks in my head, it's ablsolutely true.
-we'll have to leave the state agian if there is another one... thanks man.

aum:thanks, nxt time.

Keepiru: THANKYOU FOR LENDING ME YOUR CAMERA! I can't thankyou enough for the favor. I also must say, SORRY. I HAVE'NT GIVEN IT BACK YET! I think i owe you like a hundred drinks now. I'll try to catch you tomorrow. thanks for the kind words. -POST SOME!

Metalwinds: can do, my pencil done broke already, but i know you've broken 5 by that time. It was fucking great meeting you too man, my only regret - not hanging with you more. Next time will be golden, thanks bro.

dCepT, Calle: thanks guys, no word on the nxt one yet.

xia: thanks for stopping by bud :chug:

thankyou all for your kind words, but don't be afraid to crit, it is much welcomed.

I'm still riding in the Austin wave, I drew all weekend long while having a strange craving for Red Bull... Got some bigger stuff coming soon.

I'm sure you feel the same way. Hopefully i'll have some more finished stuff soon. Keep rocking the threads bro (you have to if your the sketchbook police... ;))

Sean: thanks man! i don't know that i deserve that title, and to answer your question, tons.

jet-Mike: whatup my brutha? I have to post the extreme close-ups of you if you don't mind (naah, you don't right...) I had a fucking awesome time hanging with you in Austin, I'm mad that i did'nt hang and sketch all 5 nights (booze is the devil i tell ya...) Thanks for the compliments. No jobs yet, John Muller told me that i could have a job in games if i learned 3d. So do I drop everything and try this? I'm undecided, but I kind of just want to develop my drawing, I passed up a full time web job for this reason. Keep in touch Mike, and keep posting!

Ra Havok: Amen to that, all parties benefit from a workshop of that magnitude (I really wanted to go to Amsterdam, maybe Prague... Thanks for your kind words.

Van: thanks man. it'll happen, and the inspirations mutual, i'll try to post more officer;)

bwkenough: thanks man, i'm pretty embarassed by the beginning but i think it needs to be there as a testament to the threads.

Groover: thanks buddy, that's actually one of my favorite too, but it fills me with rage to see it because i may have lost that book at a friends house last night (I have to go look for it after i type this.)

Maldrin: thanks!

kerry iru: drunk posts all over this thread... You be TCB'n yourself, now go get a job at Cartoon Network!

gabo: i just wrote a response in your thread that i won't retype here, but in short, thankyou for your kind words, I was doing a little shitting myself when I saw your book, people don't realize that I keep 3 books going at a time, and there is alot of crap that stays in the book (and under the rug). Please critique anything you see as i will gladly take your advice. thankyou.

So i finally got off my ass and updated, sorry about the hiatus. The power at school was shut down last weekend and i haven't had a chance to get up here since. Soon I will have access at home tho so hopefully i'll get on it then.

Wow.. just wow. This is fantastic work steak. The effects of the workshop are becoming all the more evident. Great work, both pen and pencil. I especially like the page of sketches on toned paper. Hey thanks. Ill be the first to admit that Ive been slacking since summer started, but since Sat Ive been drawing nonstop (except for Saturday night...heh heh...uh...sorry about all that...I was drunk...*blushes*). I might need your expert advice on some things a little later, but thats later.
Youve done some stuff I havnt seem since Friday. Your self portrait page is fly-as-hell (the moonite t-shirt sketch looks just like you lol), as well as the two below it and the stuff on tinted paper. Mad skills as always, and as always leaving me with that motivating twinge of jealousy. Hope your 4th was good you found your sketchbook (moral of the story: dont bring sketchbooks to parties)!
Catch you around, meanwhile check this stuff out:

I concur, It was rad. I think the next workshop, we should start a gang, get us some turf, and sketch like madmen. Wow, this update is NUTS! Solid Solid drawing going on in here. Post the extreme pics if you must...eheh. I worry that I may have to install barbwire around my residences from here on out to keep mobs of girlies away once my pictures get out.

indeed, this update has made america a little more free.

I guess the ultimate question is, what do you want to make money doing? If you want to get into games, DONT quit your drawing, but start picking up some 3D. I'd probably recommend Maya, because that is becoming the prevalent package, but Max is a close 2nd and I could help you some with that (mostly with base functionality and animating in Character studio). Also there are websites around with tutorials and such (like CA, but for 3D), I could get you some links if you want.

My only crit is the SP. It isnt a very strong likeness, and the values are kinda...weird. I know its pen, but you are so good! I know you can do better! Take a little more time at the beginning of the drawing, maybe, to get yourself situated to render the rest.

Keep rockin the sketchbook, bro. Fantastic.

ahh, the 4th of july: a day to celebrate the anniversary of our nation's independence w/ cook-outs, fireworks, and updates to our respective daily sketchbooks. wa wa wa~
It's getting old saying you draw good, so this will be the last time I say it... today. Re-tool is re-excellent (?), but NASA man in the first pic is my favorite. I have issues w/ the page above the self-portrait (the limited edition foil and hologram issues, nyuk nyuk) Foolishness aside, something looks a bit off w/ the way the big figure's forearm meets his hand. well, not necessarily where they meet, but the forearm looks a bit flat. also, some things don't look quite right w/ the jumping guy right over the large figure's right shoulder. but jumping guy is in an unusual pose, so it's cool that you even attempted that. anyhoo, these are sketches, so some of them are supposed to be imperfect and ambitous.
I think the sp is a pretty good likeness. The back of the head might be a bit big, but the face resembles the Kemp Rubin Remillard we all know and love. Good stuff, as usual. eat your veggies and stay out of trouble.

insane visions: sorry man, I'm mainly doing stuff for my illustration project. It's the last three blood soaked credits I need, but I'll try to deliver upon request. cheers man.

jeff jaws: thanks bud. I didn't realize how varied space suits are from different countries and different stages of development.

dakoscwash: I screw around with different stuff, most of the pen is a stadtler .01 but i've been using a .5 2b mechanical pencil. Lately i got a calligraphy pen which makes big strokes to loosen up. With the toned paper i use a white prismacolor or white charcoal, but i try to keep switching around. -cheers man.

obid619: do you mean CA for life? thanks man, that study is actually of an old nailgun, if thats what your talking about.

Keepiru: thanks kerry, i found the book and it's the last time i'll bring it there for a party, i had a lil' too much celebrating. I'd love to help you with your stuff, but every time i ask you about it you give me like 3 seconds of look time before you wisk your book away. Sup wit that! hope you had a good freedom time on the 4th, this Deseve guy is a friend of one of the alumni portfolio reviewers, see if you can talk to Mike Lester when you get reviewed. [typing from the other room...]

jet-propelled-backpack: We'll defend that turf with chains and mines, Then, sketch guard dogs that are good enough to pass for real dogs. Then we'll build a robot. For some reason. It would be great if you could give me some links. If i do 3d I think it would just be model building (which, i assume, would include minor test animation) When John Muller looked at my book he said that if i showed my designs in 3d i'd have a good chance at a job. I just need to get my hands on a pirate copy of Maya (hummm... perhaps the jetpack knows how my po-dunk mac self can do this?) Your right about the SP, soz now i'll draw another. Thank you for the crit, i need it badly, and crit more if you see issues. I did that one in multiple sessions, but, NO MORE EXCUSES. thanks again bro.

elboy: thanks Roy, Comment like these are good-uns. I referenced my hand with the forearm and then guessed on the muscles (the moral is learn, not guess...) and the top left is pretty weak, my figures start to collapse (literally) if i don't draw them all the time, thats why it's a weird pose. His rib cage is collapsing on it's self (reference of course). I've got ISSUES (har har...puns anyone?) with my self portrait. The nose is not big enough and the head is too big. It sort of makes me look 12 in an old bags-under-eyes way. I hope you had a freedom filled 4th, apparently you missed the part where you update your sketchbook... Re-Tool is the name of the store, i just wrote the letters because i'm a nerd. Much love to you brutha. ATL what what. (?)

MIKECORRIERO: thanks for stopping buy man. Your monsters kick so much ass I'm filled with jealous rage (of the much respect for your talent kind)

Most of the free style was too combat the over-carefulness that comes with trying to get it right the first time. It started as an experiment but was really fun. Partly because it was so relaxed, and I liked the effect, those drawings were very quick. I should have the astronaut guy colored soon. thanks again man. I will put all three on a page very soon.

I did find something to crit you on (which was seriously tough, but I wanted to do something other than praise you, which I can probably do all day since these drawings are fuckng sick!), so here goes...It looks like the females you draw from memory have a lot of similar characteristics, kinda long-ish necks, slightly bigger/wider eyes, really slender build. Mighty lord Wutang! Shit your stuff's looking great!!!

xia: Any advice for someone trying to bust into the industry? You work in games right? If not, you should be.

Thanks buddy! Yes, I do work about 10 hours a day doing 3D/texturing creature (the actual production work) but sometimes (just recently) get lucky enough do concept. I am just a rookie so they don't let me do much concept, also it's take away my actual production time, and I am not that good. Plus, I haven't been drawing that long, and just start learning how to paint. :) LOL It's harder to be a concept artist than we think it is.
Anyway, let's see,...um just keep doing what you doing now and be phoenomenon. Like BAM BAM! *MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A KICK AS PORTFOLIO* (really important because the art degree will not get you anywhere) If you want a full-time concept job with great game developing house, pretty stable and fat pay, work hard at what you want to do and be great (because good enough doesn't garantee your carreer when time get tough). Most of the time with in...says...50 people game company...there are only two to three full-time concept artists in the house. So the odd are pretty slim. Some mid-small game dev houses only hire contract concept artitst. Also, there are some 3D artists who can also do kick ass concept. So...in reality artist's brutal profession but we are bless because you always get to do the thing you love (and that's why everyone wants to do). Though many movies nowaday need artists more than ever! production, preproduction, all sort of artist plus fat-pay. (ID guys has the most advantage like Criag Mullan, Feng, etc. because the way they think and they can visualize the non-existance and make them real)... Though it has its falls back, it's only seasonal and you have to make a right connection.
Donno man! But I'd say keep doing what you are doing, you are doing great!
One more thing...for movie, game industry...Check SAMMY's stuff. His stuff is very much valuable to movie and game production. Environment/prop design has huge impact on the look of the game or movie. Creature/Character is somewhat less important...for over all look. But other than Gaming and Movie, I have no idea. I hope I make some sense.
If you have any particular question and I can be of any help, PM me.
Great work and good luck. Keep kicking ass. Trust me hard work pays off.

Hey Kemp-tron, cant tell you anything that hasnt already been said! It was really helpful talkin this morning to both you and Murawski, both gave me alot of input on how to improve my drawings and style, so a big thanks from me to you. I looked up the book you suggested, I think this is the direction you were trying to point me in: http://www.naughtykitty.org/barbapapa/barbameet.html
If so, I couldnt find specifically the book you were referring to, which I know was the whole point (most of its in french, apparently FRENCH hippies wrote the books! ) I learned that barbapapa roughly translates as "Cotton candy father", which is the reason he is pink. I still got a huge kick out of looking at the obviously drug-induced illustrations, they are fantastic. So thanks #2 for the reccomondation, it was just right for my friday-fied brain lol.

cire600: thanks for stopping by! I love your thread, too bad we never met in Austin. I'm glad there are others out there who appreciate the ol' bag wine.

Grove-nu: C'mon man, I should be typing that about your stuff now. Like we've been saying, I think everyone got a boost, but I definitely draw more since Austin, it's kind of the only thing I want to do these days. Funny how questioning one's life can make them get off the ass, but I digress. It's like working out, I've been drawing everyday now and it helps allot (still needs way more work tho.)
You're right about the girls. It's sort of a pin-up thing i screw around with when I'm bored (uh yea, thats it. e-hem) It's also a result of cheap tricks I rely on when drawing girls. Some times you set out to draw a girl and they start to look like guys (I hope i'm not the only one with this problem). What I mean is it's hard to draw "feminine" facial characteristics sometimes. So I tend to rely on old habits. Thankyou for the crit tho man. If you see anything else don't hesitate to let me have it. And keep rocking your sketches too man, they only get better.

xia: again, thanks for all your kind words and help man.

Kyler-Durden: thanks bro. Have fun in Maine and when you get back we'll rock the streets of ATL (sheeeiittt).

insane_visions: thanks Rich, It means allot bud.

obid: thanks bud, I'm using a 2b mechanical at the moment. I have to give Rich the credit for that. He uses a 4b (which i couldn't find here) in his mechanical. I don't know if I'll ever go back to the HB. With a soft pencil you can really hit the right lines in the beginning, which is very important. The pens are a flat nib calligraphy and .01 stadtler.

kemp - godDAMN your work is getting more andm more amazing. i cant stop staring. LOVE that portrait of jetpack... the likeness is DEAD-on and your crosshatching technique just screams confidence.

I am also drooling over your rasputin/russian/bucaneer sketches. you doing them out of photo ref, per chance? Or maybe a book?

anyways, you've been spitting out some amazing amazing stuff recently, man. I want to walk away from your sketches, but they keep calling me back to them like a sultry mistress lying naked in the pale moonlight... my eyes always keep lusting for more!! LOL ...

keep keepin it real down in joe-ja, aite?

endregen: it's from Anchorman, I laughed more than once (like the whole time) thanks.

hito, scottg: thanks guys.

syrogen: just keep doing it. My tip goes like this "be weary of the rendering, form is so much more important!" and draw from life, can't beat it.

jackal: thanks man, color it is.

Mollyaru: thank you, for the kind words, yours is one of my favorite stops too. keep posting that sick twisted imagery, You don't hold anything back, that's part of what i like so much.

dako: thanks dude. Rendering is like the siren on the shore, the form is what counts. Once that's in place the drawing is enhanced by rendering.

Umar: ha, thanks dude. That's one of the best compliments i've ever had. There is a special place in my heart for the warrior/poet Dashramu. Keep it real up in Vaginia, If there is'nt another workshop soon we should converge and conquer the old confederate states of old. We'll call it the new CSA "the concept states of art(?)" sorry, that don't make sense...

i tried my hand at the color again, it is a harsh temptress, spent too long on it.
Gimme pointers if you've got em' Thanks for the replies fellas!

the likeness is dead on. that is phenomenal, kemp. the one thing i sorta notice about your girlies (in perticular), is that they kind of have football eyes. the second page of this past update is most obvious, but others sort of go that direction as well (instead of having rouder, more womanly, eyes. i love your stuff though, i aspire to be "steak-tron-jr". that portrait is hot hot HOT!

oh, and dakoscwash, introduce yourself to me at the next workshop, then brace for asskicking!

wow guys, I can't stammer out the words of thanks for your kindness. Feeling strange about life and art in general. Fresh out of school but in a crappy job (just crappy in that it's boring). It's funny, Seeing a glimpse of my life as a permanent web designer: living and dying in the same town i grew up in, has had and effect where I feel that I'm only going to survive if I can spend my days doing what I love (instead of coding). I'm envious of you guys still in school, i'll say make the time count, but you know this already since you hang out in a place like CA. We are very fortunate to live in a time and have a place where we can talk regularly from any part of the globe.

Well I'm back. Sorry it took so long. Life being the harsh mistress that she is, forced me to finish projects, move, then live in media silence while I was removed from university accounts and waiting for cable hook-up appointments.

But sheeeiiit, I just setup a wireless network in the house, and it took way longer than it should have. However, my reward is seeing that people give a shit about my work, and for that, no typed words can thank enough.

Damn, a few stolen replies on other threads during work hasn't come close to satisfying my now rampant CA addiction, it feels good to be back, but I digress...

So I thought about shutting this thread down and starting a new un' since the work in most of it sucks and my bandwidth was exceeded last month. This could be due to a few different things, so i'll look into getting more, but my point is I've gotta keep it going. it's a progress and bla and so on.

I owe you guys for keeping me on my toes (if that is actually the case...) so please keep up them crits,

Rubaaayy - your being on my a$$ with flaming dollar bills brings a warmth to me heart, ask and you shall recieveth... anon.

the sp's rock. the final one looks much more convincing than the rest but still just a bit off. im having alot of trouble with likenesses too atm. ive been drawing my ogre of a brother. your hatching abilities have improved greatly as well. when i want to look at shape and form in hatching i look at you, danny, kev, and wes. you all have a real solid grasp on it.(some more than others)

dude, killer update! the hand and arm studies are really good. The scene of the mechanic is really cool, too. What's odd, and I can't put my finger on it, is that there seems to be more perspective depth in the final sketch than there is in the color finish.

the SP's are coming along but it looks like you're getting caught up in the features by themselves instead of orchestrating them into the total face. Are you using strong enough light sources? Good distinct shadows in the eyes and under the mouth and nose provide the shapes that create most of the "likeness."

and, ee! that's one creepy snarly face with no nose!

elboy
August 20th, 2004, 01:34 PM
big updates w/ good drawings are good. all kinds of good stuff. I like the elbows, the crazy monster that's about to be eaten or kissed, and a couple of the sps have really good likenesses. I think my favorite is the vertical one on the page w/ 3 (on the page w/ 2 from memory). The drawing on the first image, the school project is great. And your digital color skills have leveled up considerably. My crit for both the school projects is that they are pretty dark and it's hard to make out the great drawing. Certainly I don't think they should be bright pics considering the subject matter, but maybe some highlights on the figures or points of interest. Oh yea, the chess pieces win too.
Don't forget to thank Mrs. Morrison (more reminders from your notes, but I think I got the name right this time). Looks like everyone's happy to have their robotic steak back.

liam.c: thanks for stopping in.

Crunch: thanks for the crit my friend. These sp's have issues, so i'll heed your advice. What I've learned from that: drawing from life is the best! Your doing the right thing drawing ogres. I'm not sure that I'm in league with them names but i think you covered that. Lately I've been heavily influenced by Kev Llewellyn. When ever i see his drawing I instantly say "dammit, I know I can do that" and hit the pencils. Obviously I can't, but the inspiration from that work is taking mine in new directions (I'm not trying to copy him). Anyways, thanks agian, now post that book of yours.

Jackal and Hito: thanks guys ;)

buzz3d: thanks, i really enjoy little life sketches like that, and they only take seconds (being small and all) but if you were talking about the cadaver, damn it was boring. (but good learning)

dako: thanks for the kind words buddy.

bwkeough: Your right about the sketch vs. the final, it's something i have to overcome, and it goes along with actually finishing stuff (which i don't do) I just looked at your site and you've got some excellent sketches.

elboy: I think that one is my favorite so far too, but it's also better because it's straight on and i could straighten out my hideous features, These colors may be too dark because i'm making them on a mac, the screens are quite off. Thanks for the reminders, that processor of your's doesn't turn off. I'll talk to you today!

Keepiru: thanks Kerry, I think i already live in a concrete box, but i suppose it does have a door on it... You'll like Morrison and i'll be looking for that sb.

Kyler: I love you too brother, Your message is flattering, as i think i said before, I envy your art-school starting, i diddn't miss it until it was over... Good luck in school and life, i look forward to what's to come from that twisted mind of yours 8)

Syro: thanks dude! I have to ask, what does PWNS mean? I'm a little net illiterate.

Endregen: thanks man, it's been a fun distraction from knowing that I need to finish something. I think I'm in denial. You do the same :)

Rkhon: Thanks dude, I think i've fallen at the moment, but I'll get up and use my retractable spear right before the facehugger lunges from the shadows. AVP, hmm. where to begin? I guess I love the other movies too much to take AVP lightly. So I was really displeased with the ridiculous crap, but then the fights started and that sort of made up for it. I thought the effects were handled well but the rest was too painful and the Predators were too overstated. I'll type my rant later (or maybe i should let it fade... count to ten...) Thanks for stopping by.

b-dubya: thanks man, I think I made my eyes a little large but thats not always a critical mistake. I definitely understated my big honker. My figure teacher told me that's a common mistake, her reason being the artist trying to flatter the subject. So i'll try to be more honest in the future :)

Trying to draw from life more. Drawing trees is tough, you have to abbreviate the leaves but be careful not to reuse the same jerky scribbles, this was my experience at least. Had a fun sketch session with the Elboy over the weekend in ATL.

kemp-tron, I likes your last update a bunch. That creature is really intriguing because most of the time your critters are pretty frightening in their postures or expressions, and I feel like this one kind has this expression like it feels sorry for itself ("why wont anybody love me?"). Maybe its in my head, but I feel a little sorry for it. Still, it is very cool, as always.
Also your self portraits are great becasue Im starting to see with the past couple that you're starting to figure out what you really look like, so now you are playing around a little more with bringing your personality out in the drawing. Especially in the last where your head is cocked, and the one next to it...that is SO you, it made me laugh how well you nailed yourself.
Great work, and its nice to see frequent updates!

I tried to make it this odd contorted thing that had eyes that look backward and jaws that snap forward but stay in the cocked position - similar to the "trapjaw" ants of the Amazon. But it mostly looks like scribbles. Anyways thankyou for the constant encouragement, i get a little crazy in this concrete box of mine. ;) I'll get out to the downtown with you and the graphics possee one day.

steak - man this is one awesome sketch thread. you inspire me. i really can't believe I didn't meet you in austin. you need to come back to texas and teach me how to f*cking hatch like that, man. SPs are awesome. DSG work is good - reminds me of brom, but much more...angel of death like...very steak-tronish. ;)

your portraits (especially the longer ones) have a ton of emotion in them. if I had your aug 24 SP or the Laura Martin pic, I'd frame them and hang them on my wall. beautiful stuff.

the knees on the chick you posted yesterday w/ the DSG pic also rock. knees are hard to do well, so kudos there.

now, not sure how important creatures are to you, but a lot of them don't seem to get completed. I'd love to see you force yourself to wrap up some of the drawings a bit more completely. I'm a starter - not a finisher, so depending on the reasons, I may be completely in the same boat with you. I don't usually finish my ideas because I'm afraid it'll loose what it has that makes it so awesome un-finished. and maybe that's the right way to be, I dunno - I rarely like what I finish, but I'm also my worst critic.

also it's great that you're trying so many foreshortened self portraits. foreshortened heads are hard to get right. I COMPLETELY suck at it. I start guessing and making shit up and stop paying attention to what I see. you've got it down really good, but keep an eye on the angles of everything. it looks to me like some of them end up with more foreshortening on some parts of the face than on others. It almost looks like it's intentional, so perhaps you're playing with perspective and doing a DAMN good job of it. Not sure, just thought I'd point it out.

your thread and your artwork are very inspiring. seriously, sometime I'd love to meet ya and soak some skills off ya. If I ever go up to portland to feed my book addiction again, I'll have to drive up to seattle and see you lot.

thanks for your comments on my sketch thread as well. I've taken them to heart.

i see a looseness in these sketches that i havent seen from you before... .continue with this and push it further (as i will do.. like you told me). some of these monster designs are lookin real nice. push your values further.. .i want to see you go all the way to black. also, start thinking about composition when you start every page. ..i know that since george pratt told me to think about composition, ive become much more comfortable with it, and it brings a nice presentation to every page. start painting traditionally as well. i remember you telling me that you are painting digitally, but i have to say (from my experience) that painting traditionally will help you more, and make sure youre doing some reference painting.

kemp-tron,
The last dump is super...a couple the creatures seem to have exaggerated equine elements (especially the top one...my horse used to do that when she smelled something bad), I really like that because it sort of grounds them...they look like somehting that could really exist. Rubygenesis is of course the master of doing stuff like that, especially her horses, so maybe go take a peek again at some older stuff on her thread. And the thing with the split hands is just scary, but Im sure that that was the point ^_^.
I agree with metalwinds, maybe get away from the wacom and try actual paints, I think incredible stuff could happen. I think sometimes something gets lost somewhere between your hand and the computer monitor that is there when you actually contact a canvas with a brush...as Ive recently re-discovered after taking some of Murawski's advice. Your recent sketches have some sort of heightened energy to them and (not to sound to cheesy) it seems like youve packed a little more of your emotion into them. I dont know what has provoked the change, but I lilkeee.
Speaking of emotions, sorry I was pretty cranky last night, I'd had sort of a crap day and was taking it out on everyone, but I havnt seen you in a while so I felt extra bad! Dont take it personally...I loves!
Anyway, Keep it up and keep it real! Talk to you later playa.

maldrin: thanks again man. If I'm not mistaken you may be under the impression i live in portland. not so, I'm in the dirty south o' Georgia... Your totally right, i need to finish this stuff. I'm still just goofing around when I need to get on the ball with the job hunt. At any rate, thank you for the encouragement, any third-party insight is always welcome. But good insight from good folk is awesome :)

Rusty: Thanks my good man. Always a hefty dose of encouragement to hear from you. Now I'm gonna try to keep up with those dsg's...

metaldanny: thanks bud. As long as we keep the fire lit (under the respective asses) we'll be alright. I'll think about composition when I'm painting more (and with the sketches), but when I sketch I'm an advocate of not wanting to care about the outcome. I used to make only tight renderings throughout college, and part of why i didn't draw enough was the frustration resulting in a bad drawing. Lightening up is a big lesson from school I feel i've benefited from it, my problem is not making the finished work from the sketch once i stumble on something good in the book, i'll work on that. Totally right about pulling out the brushes, i've got those, but the time to use them... excuses should have no place here. thanks again man.

mike: you got it, i'll get you a better one soon (gotta bet back in the coloring swing)

kerry: that actually is a horse mouth from a mag. Thanks for the comments, I guess now that I'm out of school the work matters more and more every day, John Mueller said that you start making good work once you realize you have to live off of it. This daily coding garbage is killing me softly... with it's song. I detected no crankiness, from your schedule I'm not surprised, if you stay sane through it all you'll come out with some killer art skills...

prostate: thanks man, this digital stuff is painful as is, but i painted with brushes once upon a time... From what i read Seattle sounds like a cool place for the arts, There is a slim chance i could sit in on a class at school even tho I'm done. Thanks for the words dude, your stuff is looking killer as always.

So I tried to do allot with this painting. Trying to screw around with light sources etc... I think it's too overdone and confusing but i've got to stop being over-cautious. Almost chickened out on posting.

steak - this last post is awesome. I think the creature you painted worked out pretty well, although I think there would be brighter highlights on it (at least on the underside) if it's surrounded by fire like that. Other than the contrast, I think you did a bang up job on the painting. better than I could do, that's for damn sure!

I also totallly love the barlowe inspired creature. Wayne Barlowe kicks frickin ass when it comes to creature design and rendering. yours has a very barlowe feel, and I think you pulled it off well. oh, and did i mention CONGRATS for finishing off that drawing instead of leaving it half-drawn? I asked and I did receive. :D

Yeah, I noticed you were in GA after I had said something thinking you were in Seattle. I could have sworn you and JP42 were discussing hanging out together recently and I made an ASSumption. my bad. Athens, GA, eh. Got some good peeps in the outskirts of Atlanta. If we ever go visit them, I'll have to make sure there's time alotted for a "steak break." >:D

great work on the mech, as well, but you've been told that already. watch the redrawing of the lines - i think it could be a tad cleaner, but that's probably cuz DSG is kinda about hurrying. I do love the extra tidbits on the page - specs for the hand, the launcher, etc. very nice!!

holy crap, I must be spending too much time sleeping, you're on fire here! Great demons and monsters, excellent designs and I really like your use of cross hatch.

You look like you were struggling a bit with that last SP and I'm not sure why. You describe volumes in imaginary creature heads quite well, but the SP's look flat. I think you might be getting caught between in the surfaces and your understanding of your appearance. Try this to break loose: on your next SP, use a mirror, but draw your skull with an anatomy book handy. The mirror will show you the shapes that are you, but the book will keep you in line with placement of the eye/nose/mouth.

sambrown, hito, flex, } thanks for the comments fellas. :)

maldrin: I thought you might know bout some Barlow. edenfx is making a show called alien planet for TLC based on expedition. I think it's gonna be the sheeeiiit. If you ever in the dirty south look me up bud:) Hopefully I wont be here much longer, I've gotta get out of this dull web work and into what matters (with the arts and what not.) I'll try to look out for the redraw and clean that guy up. Since i was designing the thing while drawing i left it sloppy. It's important not to be too careful with a sketch, but also important to make a better based on the first. thanks my man :D

BW: thanks man. I see what you mean with the sp, it was lazily drawn and also a little difficult to draw while squinting, my other excuse is my face is lacking in the symmetry. What your suggesting is something i need to do, Rusty does this really well since he can construct a face so well. I need to be able to do my face without looking at it (too much).

This isn't a sketch but i don't think anyones counting. I tried to bring the sexybeast up to finish quality. Still on shaky ground with paintings but i learned allot from this one. I'll try and do my Angel of Death tonight, I figure i've gotta know how to do this if I'm ever to get some work...
Please feel free to crit.

awesome work as usual dude. the painting on the figures are well done, they may need a tad bit more light. like the sexy beast is awesome, only thing is the background is a little distracting. the glow is a little too uniformed with the brushstrokes, and the gradation is too choppy. the rocks are a little too high, cuts the page and compostion in a weird place, i liked the level it was in the sketch. the rocks are still a little too uniform in shape, same as the sky.

but really things like this are nit picking on my part. awesome awesome work bro, keep em coming.

yo holmez, that sexy beast painting is pretty sweet- I would watch your saturation in the shadows though, it looks a little mirky where it could be more intense... some saturated colors on the skull would be pretty cool I think. keep it up, i likes it all.

Hi Steak, great update again.
About the painting:
First let me say this: I'm no expert and by long means not up to your level but here in Holland we have a saying: The best sailors are always at shore, so I'm going to say something about it. Hope you have some use for it.
My first impression is that it looks a bit muddy.
That's probable because the sketch is pretty dark already and maybe you paint on another layer in Photoshop set to Color (at least that is what it looks like).
I think this image could use some highlights especially the skin and the skull, and the background could be darker to make the character pop out more.
Make a new layer set to color dodge for example and paint with a low opacity not too saturated color and make the dark/light differences a little bigger.
You can use a separate layer set to multiply to darken certain areas.
At a certain point I always flatten the image and blend the colors and the linework to get rid of that layerlook.
Comments on the rocks are already given so I won't say anything about that.
Hope this helps. :\

ok kemp here it goes raw and unedited...the character design is nice and i like the implied texture on the skin and the dirtyness to it. the hands need more detail to form and how the joints work. modelers need you to be super detailed on those things so they know how to render and animate it. you could use some reddish reflected highlight on the skull so it doesnt look so superimposed.

id rethink the background as well. the green takes away from the piece...there isnt green anywhere else. it looks like it was an afterthought honestly. think about where this raw sexy beast lives then imply it in the background. the rocks need some work also...they seem like just splotches...i think you focused only on the character...thats why she looks so damn good. but the background needs some work. also her coursette needs some work...it looks a bit flat in the front. make it look more leathery or just refrence more coursettes the bright blue is the harshet part. tone that part in the front down a bit.

i do love the varation in colour in the character and i think it is a great painting of the character and with a few hints itll be great. hopes this helps man...i do want to reitterate that i do like the piece. i just wanted to be as thourough as possible. good luck man.

out-back steak-tron - hot diggity! Nice update. Weird coincidence that I got to do some life drawing today too and I haven't done it in a long time. Anyway, the way you rendered that last one is fucking tasteeee! You know what, I was gonna give artkelly a crit on her (really good) life drawings about the head being a tad too big, then I decided not too since I thought maybe it was the model, and then I look at these sketches and see that the model kinda has a big head! Nice detective work eh? Damn, that was pointless...

I just haven't had the time to post lately....I'll be all over this mofo in a month or so, though.

You rocked that life drawing, and I like the way you use the pencil shadings again...

i'm toooo lazy to look if i mentioned before, but I think I did; occasionally when you draw eyes, they look real oblong. its becoming less of an issue I think...but wanted to throw out the most obvious thing I see and not totally just mooch off of your sketchbook.

Wow man. That skull headed woman is both bizarre and disgusting and lovely. I love your dark sense of humor. Besides your evident progress in color and lighting there's a quality that I do love in your sketches: the narrativity; instead of a frozen pose, they are like images taken from a movie. You want to know the rest of the story.

On the minus side: I'm not crazy about your cross hatching style. I think that using midtones -like in that last arm live drawing- your drawings improve a lot. So many lines can be distracting and flatten a bit the figures. Just an un-informed opinion, you know :)

Keep it up. Yours is my first-checked thread now.

SamB ]> thanks dude, that model is actually really short, but I may have oversized the head anyways.

elroy: ]> gasp! secrets revealed! thanks bud :) it was fun hanging in the A-T-H.

Yaiko ]> thanks for the analysis man. I feel I still have improvement to do on the hatching/layering technique. I'm trying to vary up my methods for describing forms. So allot of these are meant as an exercise in not relying on the smudge stick. If i want a good looking finisher tho I still use it. It's good to hear from you again.

More drawings and not PS paintings, they are hard and non-post-able at the moment, what can I say. I was watching C-SPAN while drawing old-guy faces this weekend. This is an interesting exercise because the camera stays in the same position for a long time on one person and if the camera does move it's just another old guy. So I got to make frankenstein like old man creations.
Got some drawing in at the museum with the Elboy too. There is a cool Augustus Saint Gaudens exhibit there I'm going to exploit for as long as I can.

I went to life drawing again and am digging the regular practice. I'm getting a little faster but still think I'm moving too slow. We had a great model this time that did some unique monster-like poses and was toned but skinny making the bones and veins pop out. Hopefully we'll get him again. Agh, you make me crazy! I know I saw these briefly last night, but looking at them now, I can't believe how much you can get down in three minutes. You are a demon...livin' life in the fast lane. It's always fun to watch you draw, I never want to hover but I know I do. Sometimes when you open your sketchbook, the scent of warm apple pie and springtime flowers and all of the finer things in life just fills the room. Tee hee.

Oke maybe thats pushing it. Hopefully if I keep going to these I will get a little faster. These are beautiful sketches as always...I'm with JadeDragon, I really like when you have that fluid gesture under the hatched value, Its a nice effect, especially the ones where the heads are hinted at with a scribble, but you've gotten rendered in the body. It provides an intresting contrast, and offers some insight into how you think about the figure.

Looks like the gloomy weather you were wanting has finally gotten here. Have fun and stay dry.

I like september f1 and f2 most. The way you hatch is pleasant to watch. The quality of your linework shines with f4.
How big are these?

Perhaps you could try to draw the hands and the feet -which are difficult- before you start rendering.
