August 15th, 2007, 08:00 AM
nice topic im in :)
August 15th, 2007, 11:10 AM
Can I ask a question. My tablet is currently dead and as such I'm only able to draw using traditional media. If I submit a well rendered pencil piece will it be thrown out because of quality issues?
August 15th, 2007, 12:08 PM
bullets 6 and 7 in the main contest rules image states that pencil is just dandy ;) now quit stalling and get to work.. - JAG
August 15th, 2007, 12:47 PM
Too juicy a topic not to take up. I've got an international move next week to prepare for, though, so no promises about quality.
August 15th, 2007, 01:24 PM
love you guys. sorry i'm not as active as i should be - i managed to squeeze this one today - but i am ussualy busy over my head. not much time to draw :(
August 15th, 2007, 01:45 PM
Cool topic, I going to try and hit this one.
BurntUmber: Hey dude that sucks about your Wacom. My wife found this link to get a sweet deal on a Graphire tablet.
Circuit City has Wacom Graphire 4 4"x5" tablet with pen and mouse for $100 - $50 rebate [or online, program id PAKBD] = $50. In-store pickup is free, otherwise shipping is $4. Lowest on PriceGrabber is $85. Thanks Holli

I put the FINAL in the FINAL Thread!
August 15th, 2007, 05:36 PM
Im in, aaaand wip:
August 15th, 2007, 06:44 PM
Oblio, your colours are great and insane. I like where it's heading and feel it just needs some tweaking to get you to look at the character more. That green cloud is just as vibrant as his face and is competing for attention. I think the right side grabs too much away from both the character and those fun silhouettes you made behind him.
Has a urban graffiti feel to it and looks like you had a lot of fun with it. Keep it up.
August 15th, 2007, 09:14 PM
Sure why not, haven't done this in ages.
August 15th, 2007, 09:45 PM
pulling out, the more i work on it the worse this thing gets
August 15th, 2007, 10:09 PM
CONCERNING THE FINAL THREAD
zynic - GREAT START BUT AS A FINAL?????? WITHOUT A BACKGROUND I DONT THINK YOU WILL WIN THIS COMPETIITION!! period!!!!: ps: cool helmet design!
I CRITIQUE CUZ ITS APPRECIATED NAHMEAN?
oblio - sick dreadi; cant wait to see the clean render... your characters relaxed huh? ps: your pics perspective really stands out....
Supervlieg - cool man i also think background is important in your piece like zynic that posted in the final thread allready... i really like his uniform so far as a medic... ps i noticed everyone has a mask
invisiblewombat - your medic reminds me of what i started with; the medic actually helping someone in the warzone.. cool start and i cant wait to seeyour next few wip shots ps: your piece has the most action going on compared to the rest, posted so far....
critiquin others work because ima place holder!
WIP coming TOMORROW! pz
August 15th, 2007, 10:15 PM
heres an update WIP of the painting.
August 15th, 2007, 11:07 PM
Bumskee: can you clarify what you mean by biomechanical?
August 15th, 2007, 11:29 PM
and ill post the WiP, need to fix the anatomy! his torso isnt at the same perspective as the legs
August 16th, 2007, 01:19 AM
I saw this topic and I decided to give this CHOW a shot, please let me know if I'm doing something wrong.
This is obviously still a WIP, any C&C is welcome and appreciated.
August 16th, 2007, 03:04 AM
If I submit a well rendered pencil piece will it be thrown out because of quality issues?
Pencil renderings are acceptable, as long as they're finished.
I've seen some great purely pencil entries in the past. I recall one in particular from Mr Visions...
August 16th, 2007, 04:35 AM
Bumskee: can you clarify what you mean by biomechanical?
i may be wrong but, but biomechanical to me says the borg or basicly any creation that needs both living tissue and some sort of mechanical structure in order to survive or opperate.
August 16th, 2007, 06:28 AM
PLZ can someone clarify "bio Mechanical". What are we looking for in concept? Is it ading some robot parts to the person? I looked it up in wikepedia and the defenitions are way to fluid?
(I'd hate to spend some ten hours on this only to hear its not bio Mechanical enough sort of thin after I finnished it.)
August 16th, 2007, 06:53 AM
migsta i realy like that image, but that claw scares me, if it was a choice betwen him medicly treating me or me treating myself, i think id choose myself.
August 16th, 2007, 07:24 AM
The title Says:
CHOW#84 Guest Host:bumskee Topic: Chemical Warfare Field Medic
and it says Bio Mechanical inside the thread.
hmmm, This got me a little confused.
August 16th, 2007, 08:06 AM
nice works guys
ok mine for now
August 16th, 2007, 11:37 AM
update - still WIP.
thx for the crit guys. still in need for some.
damn - cleaning this mess is hard.
August 16th, 2007, 11:53 AM
I had taken bio-mechanical to be a very BROAD subject. Technically, a pace-maker would be defined as bio-mechanical. So I would take the subtle approach as opposed to the overly cyborgish path. But that's just me.
Whiteee: I can't wait to see what it looks like finished.
Super: awesome stuff as always. I'm going to have to rethink my head, I had been thinking something along the same lines as yours.
Migsta: cool painting, but the colors and feel of the character remind me too much of Master Chief in Halo.
Wombat: Digging your design, cool looking stuff. I also like that he's interacting with a victim.
Oblio: You've got a great painting style, very artsy and pretty. Though my biggest crit is that he looks more at place at a New Years Eve party with his champange loaded gun. :)
August 16th, 2007, 12:19 PM

thanx for the feedback dude. I am making some mechanical details only to the over al aearence, hope that will be sort of right.
August 16th, 2007, 03:22 PM
Here's mine, I worked on it a little bit during lunchtime.
My fav is Whiteeeeee's !
EDIT : aaah absolutly no time to finish it :(
Wow Whiteeee, that's great! I like a lot your style.
August 16th, 2007, 03:40 PM
It's just a sketch (and not in the final pose), but critique is greatly, greatly appreciated.
You can see all my notes on what each part of his gear is supposed to do. His weapon isn't there yet, I think I'll design it separately since I'll be doing another image anyway.
August 16th, 2007, 03:42 PM
quick sketch: not sure if i will keep it or fix this...
going to try more sketches which i will post later
August 16th, 2007, 04:04 PM
heres some sketches
This guys gonna change a bit
August 16th, 2007, 05:33 PM
Heres my take on the Chemical Warfare Field Medic.
Survival suit and air and fluid filtration system. The system is powered by solar power and the expelled body heat of the soldier. A small white phosphorus round machine gun. Assorted medic equipment and a portable zoned air purifier and decontaminate - works within a limit radius. Bionic arm and would most likely be equipped with small charge explosives (backpack).
August 16th, 2007, 05:38 PM
wow nice one Yanner i really like it
everybody else nice works guys
ok mine :)
August 16th, 2007, 06:41 PM
Great topic! This really got my mind going! I'll make mine as soon as I can.
My favo so far is Yannertastic! It looks awesome!
August 16th, 2007, 06:59 PM
Yanner And Whiteeeee! DAMN you guys are good!
Qualety bar just got Raised A couple of notches to say the least. damn..
(whiteeee, that got to be the coolest/best rendered one I ever seen from you.)
August 16th, 2007, 07:58 PM
yoooooooooooooooooooooooooo ikuru i agree man
this is why i think conceptart.org is the best on the net.....
August 16th, 2007, 08:20 PM
Getting closer to completion. C&C welcome as usual.
August 16th, 2007, 09:03 PM
wendigo i like your piece
yourpicis large2; your babys head looks thin. crushed
and its missing the textures
ps love the idea with the baby gives away the kindness of the character
O MAN TODAY THE :happypatriot:  STANDARDS IN THESE CHOWS HAVE BEEN RAISED!
August 16th, 2007, 10:22 PM
my take's WIP. thou dont think i'll have time to finish it as i'll be flying off to taipei tomorrow morning. so good luck and i'll be back.... for voting :P
edit:- after posting, the medi-backpack (highly toxic chemicals) seems a bit too high up, unless its not a backpac, but a shoulderpac??? the legs... might as well just copied it from bubblegum crisis! the squatting pose maybe need lot more sketches to make it work.... the mutated civilian... dont look mutated enough....the pin-head look from the acupuncture needles doesn't help either.
new sketch with hopefully an improved pose. but the victim seems a bit odd...
August 16th, 2007, 10:34 PM
I may have bitten off more than I can chew putting this sketch/wip in. Just got inspired to give it a go after seeing the awesome posts in here so far. I wiill try to keep working on this as much as I have time to. Great work everyone.
Updated WIP. No color yet but soon..
August 16th, 2007, 10:50 PM
Hello all. first CHOW ever. take it ez on me! ... hes got like a interface type screen for a head i was gonna go with gasmask but i figured alot of ppl would... he might even be an android, who knows..
August 16th, 2007, 10:53 PM
i really like the atmosphere, hope you'll retain this atmosphere of death, heavy chemically contaminated air, solitude searching for patients feel when its finish!
i might nick your background... that is, if i got the time and skill level to execute it, cheers！
August 16th, 2007, 11:06 PM
Lot of good stuff so far guys!
ACRO, thanks for the crits, I tried to fix the baby's head. I'm going for a more stylized Hellboy type look with this. This character has two huge lights mounted on mechanical arms to help locate survivors and has two other mechanical arms to act as Jaws of Life for victims trapped under debris.
Is there anything else I should do with this before I post it in the final section?
August 16th, 2007, 11:16 PM
OK. Pencil WIP. I still haven't entirely hashed out how the armor will fit together; it's a balance between making it believable and getting the thing done on time. Here's to hoping it's biomechanical enough!
August 17th, 2007, 01:19 AM
theres some really good ones here tonight!!
heres my wip for the night guys-
August 17th, 2007, 05:25 AM
heya all :)
hi min, nice topic!
Oblio Nice, i really like the tripped out colours on your first wip.. but thats probably just me.
Yannertastic Thats just awesome.
whiteeeeeee Nice design and i like the style of rendering.. kewl stuff.
I did some rndm sketching trying to come up with an idea.
August 17th, 2007, 06:07 AM
^Damn, you planned every single detail ADI.... Kinda like an overprepared chemical warfare field medic.... ;) I mean, er, lookin' good!...
August 17th, 2007, 07:01 AM
August 17th, 2007, 11:49 AM
tool nice image you have in the finals, but isnt it supose to be bio mechanicle?
August 17th, 2007, 12:22 PM
August 17th, 2007, 03:11 PM
wow, my hat is off whiteeeeeee that is a great piece. great work!
August 17th, 2007, 04:15 PM
thought I'd post this, its the real deal, a "Bear look alike" field robot out on the market a few years from now more to read here (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/6729745.stm).
BTW Crits on My entry would be appreciated. Does the helmet/hat look a bit off? Should I take off the glasses and make a frontal view instead? Does the spiral shape on the gun, brake the consistency of the pattern? throat looks too long? etc.
tooled you need to ad some kind of gun to your final (read the brief pg1)
August 17th, 2007, 04:50 PM
Medics are left out in the field longer than any other soldier and this combined with the chemical exposure has led to mutations its said the soldiers fear the medics more than the enemy
he treats wounded soldiers by injecting them with nanobots that repair the wounds
August 17th, 2007, 05:27 PM
great stuff allready in here
my character, im gonna start coloring it right now ^^
August 17th, 2007, 08:43 PM
i dont enter much, but i had a day off, so I figured why not. Done in acryllic paint (because my cat drenched my tablet in paint filled water), marker, ball point and stuff on paper.
the idea is, that it's a gene altered medic, so that he can filter out most known toxin's and virusses and, even more crucially synthesize anti-viruses and other medication out of his own blood (and the chemicals he imbibes). So his grossly swollen body is a mass of additional glands and organs.
He caries a needler, which can be used to hand out shots, or lauch a ballistic syringe, to reach trapped patients or (when laden with poison) shoot down his enemies. He also features two hardpoints on his "shoulder" which are now equiped with a medical grade multi scanner and a articultated bone saw/mega scalpel
I tried to still give him a soldier's appearance, with the green armour plating and the cig.
whaddaya think? (need to come up with a better back drop)
August 17th, 2007, 09:27 PM
hi guys am the new guy!! hope you like my work. am working on it some not done yet.

Updated WIP, critique would be greatly appreciated:
EDIT: Yet another WIP...
August 18th, 2007, 07:08 PM
i tried to be a little loose and careless with my brushes and this is the result
August 18th, 2007, 07:09 PM
heres my sketches and color comps. At first i went with the girl figure then wasn't really liking what was coming out. I decided to go with a more robotic shape. But after careful consideration and critiques i went back to the original sketch idea. The final is posted in the finals thread.
August 18th, 2007, 08:49 PM
UPDATED all the way back on Page TWO! Go check it out and tell it like it is.
August 18th, 2007, 11:46 PM
Update on Page 2. Unfortunately, I can't make the deadline: I leave for Japan on Tuesday morning, so I'm packing my computer today. Nevertheless, I like how this one came out, so I'll probably revisit it later for my portfolio's sake.
August 19th, 2007, 04:07 AM
Though I wish it coulda been this simple....
August 19th, 2007, 05:13 AM
prepsage that lower advertisements reminds me of the survival guides in case of nuclear war during the 50's (if an atom bomb strikes, protect yourselves by hiding under a desk or table) lol
August 19th, 2007, 05:40 AM
no, no, it's "Duck and Cover!"
August 19th, 2007, 06:36 AM
Here's mine! Description and final also posted in final burner! :) CRIT PLEASE!
August 19th, 2007, 08:09 AM
August 19th, 2007, 01:21 PM
Oblio I think this one looks much better:
August 19th, 2007, 04:39 PM
I've posted my final in the finals thread. I think I'm finally starting to get better at this... ^^;
August 19th, 2007, 07:00 PM
I'm posting this image in here as well as the finals thread in a shameful attempt to get some crits! The composition is fairly weak, as I hadn't originally intended to do a background. I then got carried away, and feel like I may have lost something in the final image...
I also made a process gif, if anyone's interested.
August 19th, 2007, 08:09 PM
Too much empty space to the left methinks. Centered works better imo. This way, the angles of everything lead to the character and don't drift off into empty space.
August 19th, 2007, 08:27 PM
Hey, thanks for the advice - you're right. That really helps the composition, I should have noticed it myself! Now I wish I had painted the car in a slightly different perspective. I was being lazy with the vanishing points, I suppose. It just got to that stage where I couldn't properly 'see' the image. Those other alterations you made to the image are making me think... hmm.
August 19th, 2007, 08:48 PM
The vehicle perspective is almost negligible (it's trashed anyway). Other than that, I only adjusted the hue on the character a bit to the red and threw a bit of shadow here and there. Ya went a bit overboard on the highlights :)
You might want to consider darkening the graffiti wall a bit more to balance.
August 19th, 2007, 09:05 PM
final posted this thread PG2 and that other thread too.
Yanner dont forget u have to post that cool painting in the "final burner" thread too.
August 19th, 2007, 10:24 PM
yo the updates are impressive good work
im kinda pissed i wasnt aroudn this weekend but i will be dropping update later this week
funny how many people post pics
and expect to get feedback without givin their own critiques!
August 20th, 2007, 12:06 AM
Critiques are voluntary and should only be given if there is something constructive to be gleaned from it. Personally, I don't think critiquing prior to "finals" are even necessary given the multitude of changes that go on throughout the design process. Giving someone advice or complimenting them on a WIP is not technically critiquing. But that's probably me being an ass about semantics.
learn how to crit (http://www.brigantine.atlnet.org/GigapaletteGALLERY/websites/ARTiculationFinal/MainPages/ArtCritiquingMain.htm) obviously this is about fine arts, but same theories apply.
