Can I ask a question. My tablet is currently dead and as such I'm only able to draw using traditional media. If I submit a well rendered pencil piece will it be thrown out because of quality issues?

Too juicy a topic not to take up. I've got an international move next week to prepare for, though, so no promises about quality.

Cool topic, I going to try and hit this one.

BurntUmber: Hey dude that sucks about your Wacom. My wife found this link to get a sweet deal on a Graphire tablet.

http://slickdeals.net/?permadeal=10050#direct_deal_10050

Circuit City has Wacom Graphire 4 4"x5" tablet with pen and mouse for $100 - $50 rebate [or online, program id PAKBD] = $50. In-store pickup is free, otherwise shipping is $4. Lowest on PriceGrabber is $85. Thanks Holli

Oblio, your colours are great and insane. I like where it's heading and feel it just needs some tweaking to get you to look at the character more. That green cloud is just as vibrant as his face and is competing for attention. I think the right side grabs too much away from both the character and those fun silhouettes you made behind him.

Has a urban graffiti feel to it and looks like you had a lot of fun with it. Keep it up.

CONCERNING THE FINAL THREAD

zynic - GREAT START BUT AS A FINAL?????? WITHOUT A BACKGROUND I DONT THINK YOU WILL WIN THIS COMPETIITION!! period!!!!: ps: cool helmet design!
---------------------------------

I CRITIQUE CUZ ITS APPRECIATED NAHMEAN?

oblio - sick dreadi; cant wait to see the clean render... your characters relaxed huh? ps: your pics perspective really stands out....

Supervlieg - cool man i also think background is important in your piece like zynic that posted in the final thread allready... i really like his uniform so far as a medic... ps i noticed everyone has a mask

invisiblewombat - your medic reminds me of what i started with; the medic actually helping someone in the warzone.. cool start and i cant wait to seeyour next few wip shots ps: your piece has the most action going on compared to the rest, posted so far....

critiquin others work because ima place holder!

Pencil renderings are acceptable, as long as they're finished.

I've seen some great purely pencil entries in the past. I recall one in particular from Mr Visions...

Bumskee: can you clarify what you mean by biomechanical?

i may be wrong but, but biomechanical to me says the borg or basicly any creation that needs both living tissue and some sort of mechanical structure in order to survive or opperate.

ikuru
August 16th, 2007, 06:28 AM
PLZ can someone clarify "bio Mechanical". What are we looking for in concept? Is it ading some robot parts to the person? I looked it up in wikepedia and the defenitions are way to fluid?

(I'd hate to spend some ten hours on this only to hear its not bio Mechanical enough sort of thin after I finnished it.)

I had taken bio-mechanical to be a very BROAD subject. Technically, a pace-maker would be defined as bio-mechanical. So I would take the subtle approach as opposed to the overly cyborgish path. But that's just me.

Whiteee: I can't wait to see what it looks like finished.

Super: awesome stuff as always. I'm going to have to rethink my head, I had been thinking something along the same lines as yours.

Migsta: cool painting, but the colors and feel of the character remind me too much of Master Chief in Halo.

Wombat: Digging your design, cool looking stuff. I also like that he's interacting with a victim.

Oblio: You've got a great painting style, very artsy and pretty. Though my biggest crit is that he looks more at place at a New Years Eve party with his champange loaded gun. :)

Heres my take on the Chemical Warfare Field Medic.

Survival suit and air and fluid filtration system. The system is powered by solar power and the expelled body heat of the soldier. A small white phosphorus round machine gun. Assorted medic equipment and a portable zoned air purifier and decontaminate - works within a limit radius. Bionic arm and would most likely be equipped with small charge explosives (backpack).

my take's WIP. thou dont think i'll have time to finish it as i'll be flying off to taipei tomorrow morning. so good luck and i'll be back.... for voting :P

edit:- after posting, the medi-backpack (highly toxic chemicals) seems a bit too high up, unless its not a backpac, but a shoulderpac??? the legs... might as well just copied it from bubblegum crisis! the squatting pose maybe need lot more sketches to make it work.... the mutated civilian... dont look mutated enough....the pin-head look from the acupuncture needles doesn't help either.

new sketch with hopefully an improved pose. but the victim seems a bit odd...

Lot of good stuff so far guys!
ACRO, thanks for the crits, I tried to fix the baby's head. I'm going for a more stylized Hellboy type look with this. This character has two huge lights mounted on mechanical arms to help locate survivors and has two other mechanical arms to act as Jaws of Life for victims trapped under debris.
Is there anything else I should do with this before I post it in the final section?

BTW Crits on My entry would be appreciated. Does the helmet/hat look a bit off? Should I take off the glasses and make a frontal view instead? Does the spiral shape on the gun, brake the consistency of the pattern? throat looks too long? etc.

tooled you need to ad some kind of gun to your final (read the brief pg1)

Medics are left out in the field longer than any other soldier and this combined with the chemical exposure has led to mutations its said the soldiers fear the medics more than the enemy

i dont enter much, but i had a day off, so I figured why not. Done in acryllic paint (because my cat drenched my tablet in paint filled water), marker, ball point and stuff on paper.

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e258/nick-egberts/chemwarfare.jpg

the idea is, that it's a gene altered medic, so that he can filter out most known toxin's and virusses and, even more crucially synthesize anti-viruses and other medication out of his own blood (and the chemicals he imbibes). So his grossly swollen body is a mass of additional glands and organs.

He caries a needler, which can be used to hand out shots, or lauch a ballistic syringe, to reach trapped patients or (when laden with poison) shoot down his enemies. He also features two hardpoints on his "shoulder" which are now equiped with a medical grade multi scanner and a articultated bone saw/mega scalpel

I tried to still give him a soldier's appearance, with the green armour plating and the cig.

whaddaya think? (need to come up with a better back drop)

I'm posting this image in here as well as the finals thread in a shameful attempt to get some crits! The composition is fairly weak, as I hadn't originally intended to do a background. I then got carried away, and feel like I may have lost something in the final image...

Too much empty space to the left methinks. Centered works better imo. This way, the angles of everything lead to the character and don't drift off into empty space.

Matthew Campbell
August 19th, 2007, 08:27 PM
Hey, thanks for the advice - you're right. That really helps the composition, I should have noticed it myself! Now I wish I had painted the car in a slightly different perspective. I was being lazy with the vanishing points, I suppose. It just got to that stage where I couldn't properly 'see' the image. Those other alterations you made to the image are making me think... hmm.

prepsage
August 19th, 2007, 08:48 PM
The vehicle perspective is almost negligible (it's trashed anyway). Other than that, I only adjusted the hue on the character a bit to the red and threw a bit of shadow here and there. Ya went a bit overboard on the highlights :)

You might want to consider darkening the graffiti wall a bit more to balance.

Critiques are voluntary and should only be given if there is something constructive to be gleaned from it. Personally, I don't think critiquing prior to "finals" are even necessary given the multitude of changes that go on throughout the design process. Giving someone advice or complimenting them on a WIP is not technically critiquing. But that's probably me being an ass about semantics.

learn how to crit (http://www.brigantine.atlnet.org/GigapaletteGALLERY/websites/ARTiculationFinal/MainPages/ArtCritiquingMain.htm) obviously this is about fine arts, but same theories apply.
