Hello all!
I just finished up a series of robots and I've got some characters to share with you guys.

idBOTS: For this series, I wanted to try to make 5 fairly different bots whose primary purpose wasn't for killing or causing any destruction. I also wanted to try implementing some industrial design principles into them.

So to start you guys off, here's the idBOTS (scroll right!):

http://robin-chyo.com/art/temp/idbots_web.jpg

and here are two with backgrounds

http://www.robin-chyo.com/images/slidebot.jpg
http://robin-chyo.com/images/trihelp_liftoff.jpg

Now here's two characters I designed in between designing the idBOTS:

http://robin-chyo.com/images/masterguard.jpg
http://robin-chyo.com/images/swatsoldier.jpg

And finally, here's an abstract environment I did. It could use some cleaning up, but I like how it turned out.
http://www.robin-chyo.com/images/outlook.jpg

I'm going to be taking a break from futuristic/fantastical stuff for a bit so that I can get some more modern-ish stuff into my portfolio. Also, aside from the environment, everything else has been made using a "new" painting/coloring technique. Before I was relying on a greyscale base and a combination of different layer modes. I did this to improve my sense of value and composition. After more than a year of using that technique, I'm now starting straight with colors and adding in different layer modes.

Anyways, that's enough blabbering from me. Hope you guys enjoyed this dump!

awesome use of colour i really love it! My fav is actually the soldier not the bots. They remind me (of a good way) FFX Al Bhed. Good stuff, you sure like pink :)

Good stuff here. I like the experimentation. My one crit is that the robots were meant to have a purpose other than killing; however I honestly can't tell *what* their purpose is. Were you just conciously leaving off guns or were you really thinking about what each of these robots would be used for?

wow man
good work on the portfolio
love your insane as usual colors
hot pink? + army green?= awesome

I can agree on fukifinos comment about the robots not really displaying what they're created for in most cases. But then again i dont think that was your main concern when creating these.

some nice daring color choices as always. Keep it up!

Liftbot is my favorite in here : )

hey Robin Cool robots! I especially love that last painting, reminds me a bit of one scene in the Transformers movie, but yours is way more colorful, very cool keep the goods rollin in. :)

Always a pleasure hearing from you. My favorite is the first character sketch!

Looking forward to more >=)

EDIT: One crit though. You render things like folds on cloth pretty highly... but then you look at the kneepads and shoes and they are much looser with very little, if any detail. Depending on what kind of work you are doing, (if it's concept work) and who your modeler is, it could be good or bad, but I think at least adding some second tone or laces or something would increase the believablility of it, even if they were very very loose.

nice job robin

those twizzler glows on the slide bot are nice, i also like the ring pop burst comign from the bot taking the kid on a ride.

real creative stuff i may say, i would love this kinda direction put into a game.

my least favorite is the solider, not because of how you drew it but more so that subject matter is becoming tiring. but under you style i can let it slide.

Hotsteamypoop my friend. I love the idea of actual uses for robots instead of arbitrary killing machines, however I think only 2 of 5 really make that clear?

1st is my favorite.

only crit i have is the first bot looks like it would just fall backwards, the back leg needs to be pointing away more. the way its placed now it seems like there is another leg missing further back, but its a tribot.

thanks for the comments, peoples!

smartkyle- yeah, i think pink is my favorite color to use in my art. thanks!
DanielC, trevor, poise, Justin Oaksford, bloodfrog- thanks
fukifino, RasselTassel, Idiot Apathy- these robots were just supposed to be general functioning machines. they have a range of abilities but could be upgraded to do more. i kind of had a general idea of what each one could do (as portrayed in the images.
tribot: as seen in the image with the little boy, it can fly. but i'm imagining that it could also walk over rough terrain and be used to walk stealthily down a path.

slidebot: slidebot's purpose was just to be a very fast robot. it's got a very aggressive and organic design that i was hoping would place an emphasis on speed and agility.

bigbot: this was the most ambiguous robot out of the group. i still am not sure what i wanted it to do exactly, but i bet adding on some digital camo would make it look very militaristic.

liftbot: it lifts stuff. heavy stuff. it's the only robot i designed that can actually lift things up with it's arms.

towbot: it tows stuff. i should have probably added in something for it to tow, but yeah.. it tows stuff!

Blaze Firestorm- yeah, i'm really regretting the placement of the center leg. maybe it would've worked better if it was more articulated, but as it is, it's not working as well as i had planned :P

anyways, here's an interior environment i did recently:

Robin the glow of the light in all your pieces are some of the coolest things ever.

hey man, I can only agree with all the others, good work that you did here!
the only thing that bothers me is that your Tribot (I guess you named him TRIbot, because of his 3 legs?) seems like falling backwards! I mean he only got 3 legs and they are all placed in front of his center of gravity, he should be pulled back and down because of his mass i guess ?
but nevertheless nice bots :)

hey robin! the bots look impressive o.O;; and i see you're still a fan of the neon colors :D but that's what i like best about your art, it isn't all monochromatic.

the idea of the slidebot is neat ^^ something about the edges of the robots still bothers me, maybe everything isn't sharp enough.

the char at the end of the first post is impressive...so is the interior environ you posted last. love the reflections :O but something about the persp of the chars seems off.

hope everything is going well for you!

Hmm, I think in the last enviro the light on the floor would bounce alllllll over the place, or at least the wall across from it a little bit =)

I love it though, very cool lookin'.

Unless that last picture is sloping downhill, the characters in the background are gigantic. if you were to draw a line from the VP to the top of their head, and bring them up to the same space as the foreground guys, they would be huge.

also, why are those people standing there? there is no interaction or feeling to them. the one on the right looks almost like a zombie.

the colors are pretty nice.

donkeyslayer- I agree there were some minor perspective problems. I went back and made some adjustments. I hope they are to your liking now.

mike- :-p

some more stuff. guns, props, creatures, ships, and more envs comings soon!

this was part of the aforementioned art test. it's definitely not like my usual stuff, but it was fun trying to adapt to an established style!
http://www.robin-chyo.com/art/temp/scissortongue_final.jpg

a creature design i did one morning. i be working on creating more intimidating creatures soon.
http://www.robin-chyo.com/images/creature_a.jpg

an environment that i started off in sketchup with very simplified geometry (think boxes). it was originally going to be an office, but i decided on creating a sci-fi setting that's partially exposed to the world outside and partially enclosed. i had lots of fun doodling out the aliens. i just might want to flesh some of them out someday :]

Cool stuff man - and really nice to see some things that we are not used to seeing from you.
I actually like that character on top quite a bit. It's got a nice energy and 'fun factor' to it, that I could see you mixing in with your other work. Very cool.
Really dig on that enviro too , and I believe I saw another one you posted somewhere recently (blog maybe?) that was really good to. Seems like you have some natural ability with the enviros' you may not have known was there. More! Great stuff all around- cool to see you taking these next steps.
Oh - and thanks for that thing ;) ;) ;)

Question: Do you paint in gray scale, then color with a overlay on top and add more colors on top of all the layers?

The reason I ask is because I color better with gray scale first and then color. Love your stuff and your sketchy style. I see your art work and automatically I know it's you :)

I don't know if this is a artistic message, some style you've worked out.
but it seems to me that your work (from top to bottom) starts out really.. really well, but then at the end.. you seem to just get lazy and.. not finish it.

bloody hell, those last updates are superb. I enjoy the "rough" look of things, showing brush strokes and textures on the designs.
really makes me wanna paint more meself. :)

you have a way with color choices as well, that I just Love.

there are some slight perspective issues on a few of your pieces,
but, hey - who am I to talk?.... ;)

very cool works.
