colour wip, workin on this one slowly in my breaks :D

182117

crits:

brain - slow down on the hatching!! go over this on a new layer, and move slowly with your lines, thinking 'smooth' 'smooth' 'smooth' the whole time :D
As for proportion, there is not much point giving you proportion advice at this stage - start to do studies of proportion from loomis and other references, and you will slowly start to fix your mistake. Work on deliberate lines, so what you are communicating is clear :)

Dave: hehe sure, from hell, why not. Make sure 'overprepared' not 'well prepared' comes across in the concept!

Fuuryoku: Your figure seems to be in a different perspective as the backpack. If the backpack is supposed to be leaning forward that much, you will need to change his pose because if he were standing straight like that he would fall over!! Maybe have him kneeling or leaning on something for support...

Chiko: looking good, i like his characterisation :)

Interesting how similar all the entries are!

From: He will carry allot of different guns, swords, knifes, and other weapons and armour. I think that is "paranoid backpacker"

Grenogs: will see, i think it's big enough

Graphuji: I didn't watch that manga, but it's good though. My concept is, i know it supposed to be funny, that "everybody carries his own cross". That is reason why form of backpack is like that.

I backpacked in Aussie for 7 months with just a surf bakpack and a school bag. I had one weeks worth of clothes and some sketchpads. but I did see some people similar to the drawings in this thread. even funier when the person is a 4 foot chick with 3rd degree sun burn.

i backpacked in Tanzania, but only for 3 weeks, but in that time, i had to carry the usual everyday clothing for a very hot country, also mountain hiking clothing, which included winter clothes suitable for a minimum of -10' C. So i too defenetly know what its like to carry a rediculas amount of equipment. So some of these images are quite realistic, lol

OH by the way llothcat your image reminds me of the porters carrying (almost running)all the luggage up Killi, hehehehe.

there's a little shanty i wrote for it, just so you can see where i was headed -

"old pecksniff went out hunting
in the stormy cold of night,
to fetch himself a woolen sheep
and carve it lean'd upright.

he'd wind the wool and twine the thread
to fashion out some socks
he'd wind more wool and nod his head
then stuff them in a box

as time grew on old pecksniff aged
and n'arent able run down his flock
so he packed his wolves up in his coat
to fetch him wool for socks

old pecksniff went out hunting
his face was glib with glee
for pecksniff needed but one wolf
but pecksniff had brought three

BRAIN3001 - I DUNNO WHAT YOU TRYING TO SAY IN YOUR PICTURE? WHATS WITH THE BIG BAG AND SHERIFF? NOT REALLY SURE WISH YOU WOULD POST AN UPDATE BEFORE DROPPING THE FINAL

LOTHCAT - I LIKE YOUR FINAL DONT LIKE THE BORDER BECAUSE ITS KINDA CHUNKY AND TAKES AWAY FROM YOUR IMAGE... I REALLY LIKE YOU SHADING LOOKS REAL...

FUURYOKU - THAT SHIT IS HOTT HOPE YOU FINISH IT BECAUSE THE LINE ART LOOKS DONE AND ABOUT THE KNEELING I GUESS IT WOULD ADD MORE WEIGHT TO HIS HUGE BACKPACK SO THE VIEWER MIGHTTHINK ITS HEAVIER TO CARRY

CHIKO - REALLY LIKE HIS FACE MAKES HIM LOOK LIKE HE IS TRYING REAL HARD TO HOLD UP HIS HURGE BAG. LINE ART LOOKS PRETTY GOOD HOPE 2 SEE IT DONE PS. TODAY IS THE LAST DAY

FOOXOO - CANT REALLY TELL WHATS GOING ON BECAUSE ITS SO ROUGH BUT IM DIGGIN THE FEELING AND THE FISH! hope u finish

GRENOGS - THE ONLY ONE WITH THE GIRL.... IVE NOTICED YOU ALLREADY STARTED THE BACKGROUNDPLUS A SILLIOUETTE; IS IT A GOOD IDEA TO DO THE BACKGROUND AT THE SAME TIME AS YOUR IMAGE OR BEFORE? IM INTERESTED ON WHAT YOUR STEPS ARE BECAUSE ITS THE OPOSITE OF WHAT I DID WHEN I STARTED THE CHARACTER FIRST

TIMOTHEE - ONE OF MY FAVS, LOOSE AND STILL FRESH WITH THE ROUGH COLORING ONLY WISH YOU COULD TIGHTEN UP A FEW LINES LIKE THE DOGS BANDANA; ITS THE ONLY THING THAT BOTHERS ME OTHER THEN THAT SICK, NOTICED YOUR NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THE FISHING POLE

NURU - I LIKE YOUR SKETCH BUT HIS NOSE IS HUGE HAHA! MAYBE A HELMET?
HOPE 2 SEE A PROGRESS SHOT ASAP... NON THE LESS VERY CLEAN DRAWING WHICH IS GOOD ...

MR JOE - I SEE WHAT YOU HAVE BUT WHY DOES IT LOOK LIKE A CUTOUT OF A MAGAIZINE VERY FLAT... MAYBE REDRAWING THE CHARACTER WOULD BE BEST... YOUR BOTTOMLESS POCKET IS COOL BUT IS THERE ANOTHER WAY OF EXPRESSING THAT WITHOUT A BUNCH OF WORDS.... PS LOVE THE TEXTURE ON YOUR BACKGROUND

Here's my sort of WIP, along with some reference.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b127/simonstalenhag/backpackerWIP.jpg

I was planning on having Macgyver in there someplace, or at least Pete, but the n I already had Leland Palmer and Leonard Shelby so I thought that another film/TV character would make his backpack to much of a film-backpack.
So I went with the blue hedgehog instead.

So I ran out of time again :( and since I put some effort into this I decided to post it at least here :}
This is the whole picture...
http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa236/123spot321/backapcker1.jpg

And this is a close up of the backpacker.
http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa236/123spot321/backpacker2.jpg
I wanted to make him with at least 2 things for the same thing (doesn't really show, though :[ ) thus satisfying the overprepared part.
The thing in his right hand is supposed to be a GPS device and in the left hand he has a compass. I also did two types of walking sticks, lots of water bottles (plus a camelback :) ), light and a lantern (although this one looks more like a mixer at the moment), binoculars and a monocular (the thing attached to the belt).
The biggest problem for me was/is to put all the stuff I want to put there somewhere so it is visable ('cause the logical thing would be to put most of these things in the backpack or in the pockets)
I still wanted to put 2 types of propane burners there (so he can cook his dinner :madchef: ), a pan or 2 and a few of those do it all knives plus a normall one and a watch (just noticed that one :bashful: ) ... and of course I also wanted to work on the background

Anyway, I'll try to be on time for the next one :)

Hey thanks for the crit acro, much appreciated, I'm sure theres tons of ways to make a character with bottomless bags, I purposely wanted it to look like an obvious texture cut out. I'm in no way saying that its great or anything, but I had fun with it and learned some new tricks, I agree it could look less flat, I must go study some lighting. Thanks mate!

Acro To be honestly i dont realy think to much about it, i automaticly do both together, if im doing digital. Im traditionaly trained, using mainly oils. So i got into the habit of doing the backgrounds first. Also i find by doing the background first, its much easier to work out how the lighting effect the character in the foreground. But if your doing anything in a traditional media, its always best to work from background to foreground, that way your not accidently over painting important lines in your image that you want to see in the final image. Plus its also a lot quicker with better results.

grenogs
August 13th, 2007, 04:38 AM
Just thought i'd put another update, its gone slightly wrong to plan here, it was originaly planned to be a simple concept, slightly quirky and with character. But instead i liked the idea so much, ive made it more suitable as an illustration for my portfolio.(this is what happens when i get to enfusiastic)
Anyway heres what i got so far, i've flipped the woman around so now she faces her right, also added lots more realism to her. I still need to fix a few things, especially her right hand :(. As for the backpack, i still need to even start onthat properly yet, but with some luck, i'll finish that by this afternoon. And if i do finish that then i'll do something a lot simpler for the background just to put a finished piece in here. Though i'll probably actually finish it later in the week, with a jungle maybe in background, and some flying critters, etc....

Thanks...been working hard on improving my painting skills. My borders in these weeklies are usually the weakest thing. In this one, I figured a see-through one would work best, though, cause I really hated how the other varieties looked.

Well, this is as far as I got, no chance of getting it done in time now. I've learned 2 important things from this CHOW:

1) I need to work on speed.

2) I need to work on reading comprehension.

Gonna keep working on this, will stick it up in the critiques center once it's done.
BTW, Arco - cheers for the comment, if i'd realised this deadline was yesterday I would have worked harder over the weekend. Figured I had time to relax.
