ROUND COMMENTS:
Hey Oblio! Well, I'm a softy and it's tough for me to disqualify people, so I'll be as generous as I can. Here are the best ones:
Paulypaul
Mydrim
Neonine
Bendragon
Bumskee
Einen
Vida
Alice
Wandering Monk
Jubjubjedi
Here are a few more runners up to throw in for their effort:
Truzart
GTGauvin
Fuuryoku
Timothee
Blackrobin
Woodlandwalker
Daestwen
I really wanted to include InvertedChuachuta, but he's holding basic flute, nothing creative about the instrument. I also wanted to include -Food], but it is not clear that he is a musician. Also, there's a few good ones in the original thread that didn't make it to the Final Burner for some reason... too bad.
Oblio: I included FOOD as i thought more people would want to vote for him - the DJ thing it's not too Bohemian now.. but it might get in the future :) Techically the piece is ok so i thought it's ok to be up. InvertedChuachuta - it's not finished IMO.
Enjoy...
AND THE WINNER IS>. the UNSTOPABLE BUMSKEE.
HE will rule the next CHOW (meaning #83 = the one after the Victory Gals)

New to this. Hope I've got the right idea.
Wandering from one inhabited planet to the next, this nomadic alien prefers not to become tied down. He lives a simple existence carrying his life within a small shoulder bag and a feeble cardboard box. Together with his gelatinous understudy he pushes on, flute-snail in hand aiming only to broaden his horizons.
Wasn't sure about size - so here's a link to a larger version if you're curious:

With the soulful sounds of Sigma 9, and the Jazzy Beats off the Venusian Streets.
Come see what the universe is talking about before they move on yet again!
(Not only does our star's accompanying buddy provide a traveling stage, and needed Bass.... but he is wiz on the tubular bells).

Hey yo, just followed instructions, and heres my entry :)
Character names
Large green guy: Jubjub (after jubjubjedi :D) - magical ukalali
dread dude: jadjad - drums
Blue dude: Bilu - vocals
Green dude: Grilu -- dancer
Red dude: Rilu (lol) -- futuristic form of clapping sticks, that shine out notes of stars and letters if a creature with true heart claps them together...
Narrative:
Jubjub comes from an alien race born into a society of war, so he was born to kill... As a youngster his peers and tribe members disregarded him for his interest in things that make noise, and his hesitation to do anything wrongful... Escaping his home world, he found peace with another local a former war drummer... The trio around him, were former slave laborer's which he had recently rescued. Now they go around the intergalactic promoting intergalactic peace through their passion of music. And Bilu (vocals) is practicing for the next intergalactic idol :D with his ensemble/band having total faith in his talent and passion for singing... The picture is a photograph taken while they're performing a routine for the next show on universal galactic television, the hit series intergalactic idol (the show that can persuade the tides in universal peace or war, by its selection of the next idol) :D..
this was heaps fun to do... G luck everyone and peace...:D

Intergalactic bohemian troubadour.
No one knows where does he come from, or what's his name; so everyone refer to him as Old Joe. Always traveling with his Porgg, Old Joe seeks to fill with music every quiet street and corner of the cities across the universe, improvising tunes and melodies with his Duatar at the rythm his Porgg makes when clashing its ear-ends.
When there's no currency at all, he manages to travel ilegally inside cargo ships. Feeding the Porgg with whatever delicious "cargo" they can find.

Intergalactic Bohemian Troubador - Tom Snodgrass
Although deceased, he is not dead. The legacy of Elvis lives on, thrilling audiences across the galaxy. Tom is the whole package and has been told by Elvis' personal friends and family that his likeness to the King is striking, from his genuinely sweet disposition to his brilliant smile. And because of Tom, with backup from Colonel Gila on the 11 1/2 string guitar, entirely new audiences can experience the energy and magic of the King´s early 1970s Las Vegas performances.

Pfadhum hated the blues. its all they seemed to want to listen to on this forsaken rock in the back corner of the most backwater system in the entire frizzing galaxy. someday soon he was going to get back on the trail and finally go somewhere... if only his sollarian monkey hadn't gambled away their cargo skip the day they made planetfall he would have been long gone already. but the monkey played an octavian ogre tooth organ like none pfadhum had ever frizzing seen. it brought in the gigs, and thats what counted. stupid monkey.
he sighed. time to restring his oolap too. stupid monkey.
at least his songbird was in good form today.
the monkey probably even liked playing the blues. he didnt care enough to ask. stupid monkey.

Once a cherished mother-womb in her hive, nuclear war cast radiation across the planet and caused her precious womb to be rendered barren, and therefore useless to the hive. Fleeing her home, to which she was now worth less than dust, Kallare wanders the galaxy and tries to soothe her aching heart with song and the whispered cords of her unique three-tiered violin. Somewhere along the way a strange flute-nosed creature that blows multi-coloured bubbles from his flem decided to follow her along, and any bubbles that happen to fall upon the tip of her bow by chance burst with a gentle ~ting~ of a small bell.

Famous space-musician Smacky Oolate fulfilled one of his lifelong dreams when he turned himself into a steam-powered cyborg-instrument, so that he "never would have to carry that bloody thing around again".
Unfortunately he will now never be able to fulfill his other dream, which was to eat a hundred space-burgers in a row. "I'd give my left arm to be able to eat a space burger again", the starving cyborg recently stated in an interview. His left arm is currently for sale at the Mon'Java auction house.

His name is Obou, and he plays the quasiphone, a similiar instrument to the saxiphone, but able to produce higher pitch sounds. In fact, human audiences are warned to wear earplugs, because the high notes have been known to blow human eardrums. He travels the galaxies, playing seedy intergalactic jazz joints, where he is much reveered for his Earth-style jazz.

It is a tough life to be a singer. Slek and his pet Tuch hitchhike their way around the galaxy, wherever life takes them. Slek plays the instrument, while Tuch howls to the music.
Tuch : "I dont think he likes you."
Had just a tid bit of time to touch it up.

the instrument is the floating holographic balls, his robot companion is the amplifier/visualizer/coin collector. They work spaceports till they have enough cash to relax a bit on a world, then again till they have enough to catch a ship to another.

I wanted to create a character who used its music to mesmerize or otherwise manipulate its audience. The result is this wise and somewhat lazy looking alien. His instrument is based off of a Bassoon and I imagined it to sound similar to several Bassoons being played at once. When he blows into the tiny mouthpiece, the sound carries out from the openings in the instrument. He controls the sound with his mouth and the three keys near his hand. The keys cause the shells on the three large pipes to open and shut. The remaining pipes around the instrument are handled by his little companions. They are a mix of cheetah and gecko, weaving around the instrument at lightning speed to cover each little hole with their webbed feet and hands, which changes the sound the instrument makes.
The music from the instrument is the thing that places his audience in a hypnotic state. Near the bottom of the instrument is a bowl in which he uses to pour aromatic potions into. The smell from these potions billows from the pipes when he plays and further enhances the hypnosis, enticing his audience to do his bidding. The nature of the music could cause them to do anything from dancing in merriment to following him into the dark allies of a marketplace to have their valuables stolen.. or maybe their bodies! This is an important aspect to my character because I felt that he would make his living by doing things that are akin to the acts of a rogue or a thief, only through his music. Also, the characters would be immune to the effects of the potions as they come from their native planet.
I imagine this character's roots to be shamanistic. His attire and the potions he concocts are a testament to that.

Crap. Late for my own topic, wish I had time to color it.
My inspiration for this guy came from a twig I found at a local beach :).
I envision him to be an erstwhile scholar and a practitioner of the arts, a member of a long-lost plant-based species. Though his main passion is music, he also has a predilection for reading and writing. His musical instrument is part of his being and is carried at all times on his back when he is not entertaining his muse. The sounds that he makes resonates within him and emerges from these tubes that protrude behind him. While predominantly organic, he also incorporates some synthetic parts to help perfect his sound. His partner, a younger version of his species, plays along, creating drum rhythms on his head.

Oh jubjub and Oblio! Why is it so important that the winner of last round has to say who goes to the poll and who doesn't? The weaker entries will hardly get any votes anyway, usually, so it all doesn't matter much in the end. You might as well put 'em all up. Of course if that takes an extra 10 minutes it might not be worth it, so just judge for yourself, Oblio rather than waiting. Why have us all wait til jubjub gets up again, then maybe returns from a day of work or whatever - and then, finally he can tell Oblio - thus we all have to wait about another day to finally get an idea of where our piece stands compared to others (i.e. the poll).
My two cents.

Thanks for the reply, but that doesn't realy help much, great so i may have broken one of the rules, maybe even 2. hhhmmm... which one? becouse, i'd realy like to know, as i dont want to make the same mistake again next time. and i'm sure other people who have also found themselves in a simuler situation would also like to know their reasons for not being accepted. After all, isn't the point of this forum to help out each other, give constructive critisism, tell people where their going wrong, etc...
dragon4lunch I agree, becouse everyone has a different point of view, one persons perfect piece of art could be another persons piece of trash.
But hey, what do i know, thats just my own point of view, and i could be totaly wrong.

dragon4lunch I agree, becouse everyone has a different point of view, one persons perfect piece of art could be another persons piece of trash.
it's the main reason. once you will start working with a real client - HE will decide and select a few. The Host makes the call for a topic - we try to interpret and come with the best vision, he gets to select the good ones according to his initial demand.
In our case.. each client is also a good artist - one that did good enough to win a competition.
The vote.. is a secondary phase.
it takes much more time to decide who goes up and who does not than to include all the pieces to the poll. If we get to crit the pieces.. you can add another few hours depending on how many entries and how big the crit.
But here we try to give much more feedback.
If your'e not in the poll - is a bettr feedback then if you are there.. and you get no votes.. or a stray vote.
This is not about pride. It's about getting better while having fun.
Hope you see my point.

July 17th, 2007, 04:08 AM
Hey Dragon4lunch! Well, I do agree with you for the most part. Obviously, the individuals who participate in these community activities will naturally weed out the weaker entries. I guess we are suppose to look at this process as if a client were being presented with multiple options...a client would not be presented with EVERY option that was created. There are some entries that simply did not follow the rules or had poor execution of their ideas/concepts. In the end, you need to balance out all the criteria, and yes, a good chunk of it could definitely be subjective. I suggest that you re-read the 3 points that I wanted in the initial post for this topic and check out each entry again. Please keep in mind that good execution and presentation are a given, everyone should be aware that this effects the final entry. You will find that most will not have fulfilled all the points, but may have excelled in one or two of them. For me, the most important thing was that 1.) The musical instruments were UNIQUE, 2.) The character concept, based on the given criteria, was creative and designed well, and that the individual was obviously a musician, and 3.) The execution/presentation was good. I'm sure Oblio will go through and give a more in-depth critique of each entry. I am planning on doing so when I have time later this week. That way, each person can understand where he or she stands with their concept. Also, keep in mind that I am human and make mistakes...if any of you believe that there is an entry that really should be there, then speak up.

I'm actually extremely upset, i know mine isn't the greatest artwork in the entire world but i worked hard on it. I've waited the past couple days to see my entry maybe even getting 1 or 2 votes, just enough to tell me i'm headed in the right direction and that some people like my artwork. I come on today though just to find i didn't even make it and that the hard work and time i spent on it seems to mean nothing. I feel like everyone that enters deserves to be available to vote on, and let the group as a whole decide who the winner is. I know i most likely wouldn't have won, but i wanted to at least be a part of it, and i feel as though i have been left in the cold.

Same thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago. Most probably this thread is for people that already knows all there is to know and shows it. That's why I vote for bumskee. They make no coments, just post one image and win.
Maybe we could get a contest for people that wants to learn so that we don'T spoil your fun. Or just keep posting in case someone decides to give critique.

July 17th, 2007, 09:57 AM
I think we all have responsibility to learn on our own as we do these chows..its not about waiting around for people to tell you what to do...just take a look each week at the winning entries, take a look at the colour usage, the composition, the design, and you can figure out why those pieces came out stronger and better than the rest.
Although sometimes not all pieces get critiqued, you can initiate your own artistic process simply by looking at other peoples works and try to analyze their pieces to see what works / not. You can certainly help yourself to be more critical and careful to not to carry out the same mistakes in your own work.
These chows should be a practice, where the goal is to execute a piece of work according to the guidelines and to complete it before the deadline. As harsh as it is, alot of the times when you work for a client, you are given the exact situation...where you are under a tight schedule with limited instruction. It is your own responsibility to complete everything to the best of your ability..and suck it up if the client decides they don't like it in the end.
Thats just the reality of it..
meanwhile..just have fun with these chows...Just keep drawing..practicing...I'm sure if you can whip up a chow/cow everyweek ...you will naturally improve...
If you are consistent enough to post once a week..props to you...because I 'm still having trouble meeting these deadlines!

OK, I would like to see those entries in poll. I would like to vote for them becasue they carry some interesting ideas and a story:
yocibox I like the strange music instruments a lot, the self-forgetting expression on the face of troubadour, I even like the color... they suggest strange music as well... I wish you would show more volume in those wires and balls in the middle of the instrument.
ShadowOfTheSun Story's lovely ... little unattractive musician with no chance to take hearts but with with restless love for music... performs at night... has no auditory... not yet... Plays from all his heart... even his face gets all red from pressure...
Composition is good,, there is atmosphere of night and music creation... I wish it was a bit more definition in silhouettes... a bit too hard to separate objects.
rodriguez Despite a bit off proportions (short neck an too big head) I like this entry for lovely body language and expression of the face... she is very involved with the process of creating music... I think she is Bohemian enough too.
Coleb I like th funny idea and humor and the textures of the shiny fabric... want you to know I enjoyed it. Would be better to have a huge crowd gathered around the King though and bit more of strangeness in his face, not human features... Hand gesture is not expressive unfortunately... But he is entertainment super prima for sure... pose is bright, cocky and confident :).
dragon4lunch Lovely and disturbing... I had immediate association with Botticelli's gentle divas with flowing fabrics... there is a light wind in your picture ... that's funny with metal textures... Very graceful alien's entertainment number... Crits: composition is bit too stretched and a little too empty... I wish you connected those two, interlace them more a bit,,, though scarf or ribbons or interlacing arms and legs or third object.
InvertedChuachuta Old and wise from many suffering in life... this musician will bing peace to your heart... He is not showy... but his music creates a beautiful new world even if not for long, until his flute sounds. He is outcast, Bohemian and not allowed inside his clients houses... he prefers to play in nature himself... he identifies himself with nature anyway. Lovely character... face and its expression is very, very strong, body language as well... I wish you pull the rendering of the body to the level of the face... but it is not very important... I got you message, I think. I love your entry very much. Very sweet and soulful. Great storytelling.
jagehtso I looked at your entry with a great interest... unusual idea and is he's playing with a planets and stars?.. Charming... kind of strange and exciting image... he is alone in vacuum... no sounds of his music... but he hears it in his mind... I like the composition as well. I wish you connected the space unified it a bit more... But anyways very interesting story and image.

thanks for the kind words and advice sve, much appreciated. Yea i didn't notice the the problem with the silhouettes till you mentioned it. Might be from the gradient i had put over it to make it look like a light was shining on them.

I agree with Dayz. And many thanks to Oblio again for organising these events.
Anyway, Ive voted for Bumskee, Jubjubjedi and Alice. All are professionally in rendering and design.

SVE: I agree, the holographic thing was meant to be something very different, a projection of some sort of hybrid of past instruments and players, but I went through several revisions and was not satisfied, so in a rush tried to echo the forms of the least musically oriented instrument sphere, thanks for the comment in any case.

The thing with this things is, you cant go wrong!
Whatever you do you end up developing your skill!
And thats what matters!
Rodriguez your best one so far I think, Maybe next time huh? Dont give up!
I been doing this things for a year now and I still didn't make it to the poll today, but who cares right? What matters to me is that I develop my skills even when I do a shit peace, my last feaw has been kind of messy.
But thats just part of the learning process..
To mess things up in order to get new techniques etc.
For example..
Here's a thing I did today in 4 hours, no ref or nothing. (http://www.ikuru.se/box/hot-chick.jpg)
No chance in hell I could have pulled that of a couple of weeks ago.
So keep it up everyone and compete only with yourselves, cuz Thats truelly the real battle!
Peace.

Dragon4lunch, you answered your own question... no, the fiddle was not a uniquely designed instrument. Coupled with a concept and an execution that was not very strong (what is Bohemian or Troubadour-ish about these two?), it wasn't included in the final poll. All the points I wanted for this topic were weak or not portrayed at all.
Like I said previously, I'm planning to talk about each entry in the Final Burning thread when I get the chance.
Whoa, I turned on the computer when I got up and to my befuddlement I realized my entry was NOT part of the poll!!! I guess a white glowing fiddle is not unique enough an instrument?
You know, I totally agree this thing is about getting better and not about pride, but I was looking forward to getting crits and seeing what people thought of my piece. Now I don't get any of that.

I voted for: bumskee, Alice and Mydrim, in that order. Bumskee's is just absolutely perfect, from the look on the character's face to the colour, instrument, and the adorable tiny creature to tag along. (I am a sucker for adorable tiny creatures.)
I really like the colour in Alice's, though the cat-like creature in the bottom looks like it wants to eat something, rather than create any sort of music. :)
Mydrim's is just so weird that I love it for inexplicit reasons. The anatomy is pretty heavily stylized, and normally I love colour, but... I just love the weird little thing holding up the symbol.

Well I understand that mine didn't go to the poll probably the fact it didn't have one of those cheesy frames on it and maybe the background too. But I have this underlying feeling like digi-color will win these over most of the time anyway, us old schoolers will just truck on I guess...
I voted for Einen because of the interesting and yet simple design of the guy. And because I love heavy metal and couldn't help but feel that this guy fit in an episode or magazine somewhere...Cheers!

wow, bumskee killed it in the polls o_o The rendering is beautiful, but I wasn't too clear on what the little thing behind her is doing(as musical accompaniment) so I decided not to vote there.
I liked jubjub's, the sillhouette makes it feel like an entire orchestra.

As nice as Bumskee's entry is, I personally found it to be a bit conservative for my taste. It is "safe" in every way, from the colors used to the character design to the design of the UNIQUE musical instrument, and the "intergalactic" aspect of the original topic is barely there (indicated by the floating disk). He followed the rules though, and seems to have included all the right things in right amounts in an exquisitely rendered digipaint to be the most likely winner here (let's face it)!!

...why you gotta be hater jubjub? Bumskee's piece was badass and it's not as "intergalactic" or UINQUE according to what universal standard?
ikuru

dictionary intergalactic; "relating" to, or situated between two or more galaxies.
that is to say, you can be fully human (like the people in star wars for example (if you cut out chewie and jar jar)) and still be very intergalactic.
Have to seccond Inverted that Bumskees piece is by far the best one here, no doubt about it.

Nobody is being a "hater" here, lol. Gotta love what the kids are saying these days.
That would be by my standard, the host/client, BTW. I wanted to include yours as well, but the creature had what looked to me like a simple flute.

Though I thought Bumskee's entry was nicely rendered and had a great costume design, I thought Vida's piece hit it on the mark. Her character could almost fit into the Star Wars universe as an intergalactic musician. I wonder as well if that's a lightsaber lying on the floor by her feet. Good job everyone.

Woo! I'm back!
I didn't make it to the poll? Ah, well, you can't always get what you want. It looked too horrible and rushed, didn't it? I hope I can live up to the quality standards in one of the next rounds. Congrats bumskee! So simple and clean, yet so wonderful. That win is more than deserved.
